Plane Captain
Overview
A successful Plane Captain is responsible for crucial aircraft handling, servicing, and inspection tasks within aviation operations. This role involves conducting daily and turn-around inspections, performing pre-operational checks, fueling ground support equipment, and offering technical assistance and guidance to ensure efficient and safe flight line activities. The Plane Captain plays a vital role in maintaining aircraft readiness and supporting flight operations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Executing aircraft launch and recovery operations.
- Directing aircraft taxiing during launch and recovery phases.
- Conducting daily and turn-around aircraft inspections in accordance with established procedures.
- Performing duties associated with Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
- Carrying out aircraft fuel sampling and servicing according to established procedures.
- Performs aircraft towing and acts as a brake rider when necessary.
- Secures and covers aircraft following established tie-down procedures.
- Initiating and completing required maintenance documentation.
- Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction as needed.
- Operates two-way communication equipment as required for operations.
- Ensures strict adherence to Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, Hazardous Waste handling, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Ensures compliance with all general and industrial safety regulations pertinent to the contract, facility, and specific job assignments.
- Maintains the safety, security, and preservation of government and company assets.
- Delivers courteous and professional customer service.
- Operates portable firefighting equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of the work center.
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Requirements
- A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Possesses a minimum of two (2) years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
- Holds a valid Driver’s License.
- Must obtain and maintain all required government and company licenses, qualifications, certifications, and security clearances for the position.
- Demonstrates the ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in the English language, following both verbal and written instructions.
- Possesses thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
- Possesses thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, including handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and standard operational safety requirements for aircraft.
- Physical ability includes climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, carrying, balancing, and reaching above shoulder level, as well as pushing or pulling weights up to seventy (70) pounds.
- Requires close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Possesses hearing within the normal range.
- Must successfully complete a training program and obtain written certification as a Plane Captain. Semi-annual re-qualification is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance is required. Note: US Citizenship is mandatory for obtaining a Secret Clearance.
- Must be qualified on all assigned Type/Model/Series (T/M/S) aircraft.
- Former military personnel are required to present a Member 4 DD214 reflecting an Honorable character of service discharge.
- Ability to work all assigned shifts and schedules is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with F-18 (A-F), EA-18G, or F-16 aircraft is strongly preferred.
- Desired licenses and certifications include:
- Hazardous Waste Communications Training
- FOD and Tool Control Program (TCP) Awareness Training
- ISO 9001-2000 Program Awareness
- Operational Risk Management (ORM) Training
- Licensing on relevant support equipment (e.g., tow tractor, nitrogen servicing cart, engine wash cart, engine start unit).
- Possesses strong eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to handle hazardous materials may be required during duty performance.
- Use of a respirator may be required.
