Plane Captain

Overview

The Plane Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, servicing, and inspection of aircraft. This role encompasses a wide range of duties, including pre-operational inspections, fueling, and ground support equipment operations. Additionally, the Plane Captain provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to other aviation personnel.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Executes the duties and responsibilities of the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
• Conducts daily and turnaround inspections in accordance with established procedures.
• Initiates and completes applicable maintenance forms.
• Performs aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in compliance with established procedures.
• Launches and recovers aircraft.
• Serves as aircraft taxi director during launch and recovery operations.
• Toes aircraft and acts as aircraft brake rider when required.
• Utilizes established procedures for tying down and covering aircraft.
• Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction as needed.
• Operates two-way communication equipment as required.
• Ensures compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
• Adheres to all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
• Maintains the safety, security, and preservation of government and company-owned equipment.
• Delivers courteous and professional customer service.
• Operates portable firefighting equipment.
• Maintains the cleanliness of the work center.
• Performs other qualified duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) or more years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Ability to obtain and maintain any company/government required qualification, certification, licensing, or security clearance.
• Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English, including following verbal and written instructions.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
• Thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and normal operational safety requirements of the aircraft.
• Ability to work any assigned shift and schedule.
• Ability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this position include a range of movements and postures typically associated with shop/hanger/flight line maintenance activities. These may include bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions. The Plane Captain must possess eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. They may be required to lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds. The position requires the ability to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day. Additionally, close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are essential. The ability to hear at the normal range is also required. The use of a respirator may be necessary.

Work Environment:

The work environment can vary from comfortable to challenging, with exposure to inclement weather, such as extreme temperatures, wind, rain, etc. The Plane Captain may be required to work in areas with high noise hazards and may be exposed to electrical shock hazards, fumes, or airborne particles.
