Training & Human Performance Coordinator

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the world's largest airline pilot union and leading non-governmental aviation safety organization, is seeking a skilled and experienced Training & Human Performance Coordinator to join its Engineering & Air Safety (E&AS) department in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.
As a pivotal member of the E&AS team, the Training & Human Performance Coordinator serves as the primary staff focal point for policy areas related to aviation training and human performance. The position provides essential expertise and support, coordinating critical activities in human performance, pilot training, human factors, and other assigned disciplines. The Coordinator acts as a key liaison between the Association and various government agencies, industry bodies, trade associations, and professional organizations within these fields. A significant aspect of the role involves activities associated with the development and harmonization of global regulatory standards. The Coordinator works closely with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO), its associated groups, other technical committees, and Master Executive Councils (MECs) throughout the ALPA structure.
This position requires a professional capable of supporting ALPA's mission through technical expertise, regulatory insight, and effective collaboration across internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the staff subject matter expert and focal point for Training and Human Performance policy areas.
- Provide expertise and coordinate activities related to human performance, pilot training, human factors, and other relevant areas.
- Facilitate liaison between ALPA and government, industry, trade, and professional organizations.
- Engage in activities supporting the development and harmonization of worldwide regulatory standards.
- Collaborate closely with the ALPA Air Safety Organization, technical groups, and MECs.
- Maintain established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community.
- Contribute to technical writing and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Proactively identify and address issues within the scope of the role.
- Participate in a rotational assignment answering calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, including during non-business hours, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of human performance/training, education, and experience.
- At least five (5) years of direct experience in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance.
- Established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community are required.
- A thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated time management abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Ability to learn quickly and seamlessly adapt to changing demands.
- Proven technical writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and proactively identify and respond to issues.
Desired Qualifications:
- A pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types (additional aviation safety experience may be substituted for this requirement).
- Previous employment at airlines, the FAA, and/or the industry segment in a relevant capacity is extremely helpful.
Travel:
Travel up to 20% is anticipated, with occasional periods potentially reaching 25% for local and national travel.
Physical Demands:
The role involves standard office activities including constant computer use, remaining stationary for periods, moving about the office and local area, and effective communication. Occasional bending, standing, reaching, and moving materials up to ten (10) pounds may be required in the office. While traveling, the ability to move luggage weighing as much as 50 pounds (with potential for limited assistance) is necessary.
Compensation and Benefits:
ALPA offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. The projected annual salary range for this position is $96,027.00 – $137,179.00. Benefits include:
