Flight Attendant

The Flight Attendant's primary responsibility is to ensure the highest levels of safety on board the aircraft. This includes conducting safety checks, delivering pre-flight briefings, and managing emergency situations effectively. Flexibility is paramount in this role, as United's Flight Attendants must be available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours. They must be prepared to fulfill reserve assignments on short notice and be away from their base for extended periods. Dependability and timeliness are critical to maintaining the schedule and meeting customer expectations. The successful candidate will be a consistent team player, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college are preferred.
- Must possess at least one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, with sufficient volume for emergency situations.
- Must be fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
- Must be able to read and speak Dutch fluently.
- Must have the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in high-stress situations, such as aircraft evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence.
- Must maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and comply with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck, including behind the ear. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must not exceed the size of a credit card (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or must be covered by uniform pieces and must not be offensive. Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Must be proficient in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.).
- Must possess a valid passport with at least 18 months of validity remaining.
- Must have the ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without restrictions. Applicants are responsible for verifying their travel eligibility.
- Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bin or window exit), and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
- Must be able to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes, to operate necessary equipment, machinery, and doors.
- Must be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be willing to serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) in a diligent and professional manner.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Must successfully complete an evacuation drill in water (pool) during training.
- Must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Must be able to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited.
- Must be able to pass a 10-year background check, including criminal background history, that does not prohibit travel to or from anywhere United flies.
Benefits and Compensation:
United Airlines offers a competitive compensation package, including a starting hourly flight pay of $28.88, with top of base scale at $67.11, seniority-based pay increases, and additional compensation for language skills, lead positions, and international trips. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), vacation, and sick time. Flight privileges extend to the employee, their family, and friends, allowing them to fly anywhere in the world on a stand-by basis. United provides a $140/week stipend, accommodations, breakfast, and lunch during the initial 6.5-week training in Houston, TX. Successful training graduates receive a $1,000 bonus.
