The Flight Attendant is responsible for maintaining the highest levels of safety and adhering to United's safety and customer service standards. They will adapt and respond effectively to diverse customer-facing situations, demonstrating optimism, positivity, and outstanding interpersonal skills to resolve issues with understanding and grace. Representing United with pride and distinction is paramount, influencing customer loyalty through excellent service.

Flexibility is essential, as Flight Attendants must be available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours. They will fulfill reserve assignments on short notice and be away from their base for extended periods. Dependability and timeliness are critical for maintaining schedules and meeting customer expectations. A consistent track record of working both independently and as part of a team is vital.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college education are preferred.
  • Must have at least one year of customer service experience in a service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
  • Must communicate clearly and concisely, projecting their voice effectively in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable, particularly Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish or Tagalog.
  • Must possess the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
  • Must communicate effectively in high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and comply with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear), and visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must not exceed the size of a credit card or employee badge (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or must be covered by uniform pieces. Tattoos must not be offensive (violent, obscene, sexual, racist, or contain objectionable content or imagery including weapons). Decorative covers, adornments, and jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
  • Must operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) proficiently to complete required tasks.
  • Must possess a valid passport with at least 18 months of validity remaining prior to expiration and have current physical possession of it or a foreign passport book with applicable visas. Must be eligible to travel globally without restrictions. Having applied for a passport book or waiting for a renewed passport book is not sufficient to meet this requirement. As a United Flight Attendant, one must be able to enter and exit locations as a working crew member, not as a passenger.
  • Must have the ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions and be responsible for verifying travel eligibility.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bin or window exit), and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
  • Must be able to pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach).
  • Must be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Must serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) diligently and professionally.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule in support of United’s 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete an evacuation drill in the water (pool) during training.
  • Must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests and be able to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana is prohibited.
  • Must be able to pass a 10-year background check, including criminal background history. Your background must not prohibit travel to or from anywhere United flies.

Compensation and Benefits:

United Airlines offers a competitive compensation package, including:

  • Starting hourly flight pay of \$28.88/hour, with top of base scale at \$67.11/hour.

New hires will participate in a comprehensive 6.5-week training program in Houston, TX, where they will learn United's safety and customer service standards. During training, United provides a \$140/week stipend, accommodations, and two meals per day. Successful training graduates will receive a \$1,000 bonus and be assigned to one of seven hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or one of United's other flight attendant base locations. Relocation funds are not provided.
