Experimental Test Pilot

Robinson Helicopter Company, a leading manufacturer of civil rotorcraft with a 50-year legacy, seeks a highly skilled Experimental Flight Test Pilot to join its engineering-focused organization in Torrance, CA. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and certification of world-renowned civil helicopters. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a dynamic flight test team, responsible for planning, executing, analyzing, and reporting on ground and flight tests of experimental rotorcraft and systems. This role involves challenging assignments, guiding complex aircraft from development through certification.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) for development, research, and certification flight tests of experimental rotorcraft.
  • Conduct diverse and complex flight test projects, including the creation of test plans, test cards, and flight/test reports.
  • Lead or participate in ground and flight tests as a pilot, test crew member, or Test Conductor.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop test strategies, determine test configurations, and execute test programs effectively and safely.
  • Adhere to department processes and standard operating procedures to ensure high levels of safety, effectiveness, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Offer insights and innovations to improve both product and organizational performance.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary design reviews and assist in resolving cross-functional technical issues.
  • Engage in the Flight Test Safety Program, including flight test plan reviews, pre and post-flight briefings, and test readiness reviews.
  • Interface with regulatory authorities (FAA, EASA, TCCA, etc.) to conduct certification-related flight tests.
  • Maintain thorough records and perform audits to ensure compliance with processes and procedures.
  • Maintain flying currency and proficiency in various aircraft types.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a SETP-recognized test pilot school or possess significant experience in development and certification flight test programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an experimental rotary-wing test pilot.
  • FAA Commercial Helicopter Pilot Certificate.
  • FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.
  • Minimum of 1,000 hours of Helicopter PIC time.
  • Extensive experience in managing risk and safety in a flight test environment.
  • Experience in development and type certification flight test programs for fixed or rotary-wing aircraft.
  • Excellent academic record.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude and ability to work well with others.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours and travel periodically.
  • Proven self-starter with minimal supervision, possessing strong project management, organizational, and risk management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and engineering software tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in multiple makes and models of rotorcraft.
  • DER and/or ODA experience.
  • Master's degree in engineering.
  • Experience in human-to-vehicle interface design, test, and evaluation.
  • FAA Helicopter Instructor Pilot certificate and experience.
  • Previous experience with advanced flight controls.
