Aviation Pilot / Flight Program Operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently utilizing direct hiring authority for the 2181 series to staff its Flight Program Operations team. This position serves as part of a mission-critical government organization dedicated to the safety and integrity of the national airspace system. FAA pilots conduct diverse operations, including inspections of navigational aids, commissioning of new equipment, cutting-edge research and development, flight testing, and critical event response.

Position Overview

Successful candidates will join a Part 135 certificate holder with operational locations in Arlington, VA; Kennesaw, GA; Atlantic City, NJ; Battle Creek, MI; Oklahoma City, OK; Fort Worth, TX; Sacramento, CA; and Anchorage, AK. As federal employees, pilots receive competitive compensation and benefits.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • Participation in designated or random drug testing is mandatory.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Candidates may be required to file a financial disclosure statement.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a valid Commercial pilot certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with a multi-engine land rating. Candidates must also hold a valid first or second-class medical certificate (a first-class medical certificate is required prior to appointment).

Flight Hour Requirements

  • Total Flight Time: 1,500 hours
  • Pilot-in-Command (PIC) Time: 250 hours
  • Multi-engine Airplane Time: 500 hours
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours in actual instrument weather)
  • Flying Time (Last 12 Months): 100 hours

Note: Eligibility for the FV-J (FG-14) level requires an ATP certificate and an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) credential.
