Aviation Pilot / Flight Program Operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently accepting applications for the 2181 series. This position serves as a vital component of the FAA’s Flight Program Operations, contributing to national airspace safety, navigational aid inspections, research and development, and critical event response missions.

Position Summary

As a Part 135 certificate holder, the FAA operates across various national locations, including Arlington, VA; Kennesaw, GA; Atlantic City, NJ; Battle Creek, MI; Oklahoma City, OK; Fort Worth, TX; Sacramento, CA; and Anchorage, AK. Pilots in this role support the oversight of the aviation industry and participate in missions that maintain national and military operational readiness.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Subject to designated or random drug testing.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Selected candidates may be required to file a financial disclosure statement.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must possess the appropriate FAA pilot certificates and meet the following flight hour requirements:

  • Certificates: Valid Commercial Pilot Certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings, OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with multi-engine land rating. (Candidates without an ATP must complete the written exam within 60 days of appointment).
  • Medical Certificate: Valid First or Second Class medical certificate required; a First Class certificate must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • Total Flight Time: 1500 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command (PIC) Time: 250 hours.
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Flying Time (Last 12 Months): 100 hours.
  • Multiengine Airplane Time: 500 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours must be in actual instrument weather).

Note: To qualify at the FV-J (FG-14) level, applicants must possess an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) and an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) credential.

This position is covered by the FAA Core Compensation plan and the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
