Position Overview

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently accepting applications for positions within the 2181 series. This announcement serves as a resume repository for the Flight Program Operations team. Positions may or may not be filled based on operational requirements.

FAA Flight Program Operations provides essential services to maintain the integrity and safety of the national airspace system. Pilots in this organization perform a variety of critical missions, including the inspection of ground-based navigational aids, commissioning of new equipment, research and development, flight testing of avionics and procedures, and transportation support for government agencies.

Operational locations include Arlington, Virginia; Kennesaw, Georgia; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Battle Creek, Michigan; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Fort Worth, Texas; Sacramento, California; and Anchorage, Alaska.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Subject to designated or random drug testing as a part of the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Financial disclosure statements may be required within 30 days of appointment.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must possess the appropriate FAA pilot certificates and meet the specified flight hour requirements:

  • Certificates and Ratings: Valid Commercial pilot certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings, OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with multi-engine land rating. Candidates without an ATP certificate must complete the ATP written exam within 60 days of appointment.
  • Medical Certificate: Valid first or second-class medical certificate. A first-class medical certificate must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • Selective Placement Factor: To qualify at the FV-J (FG-14) level, candidates must possess an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate AND an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) credential.

Flight Hour Requirements

  • Total Flight Time: 1,500 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command (PIC) Time: 250 hours.
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Flying Time (Last 12 Months): 100 hours.
  • Multi-Engine Airplane Time: 500 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours in actual instrument weather; the balance may be acquired in a flight simulator or hood instrument time).

Applicants must provide FAA Form 3330-47-3 to verify flight hours. In-service placement actions may allow for limited waivers on certain flight requirements as detailed in internal policy.
