Job Summary
British Airways, the United Kingdom's flag carrier, is seeking a Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (CTKI) to oversee theoretical knowledge instruction within its Approved Training Organisation (ATO). This role is based in London and is responsible for ensuring the compliance, operational relevance, and effectiveness of pilot training programs.
About the Role
The Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (CTKI) serves as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved post holder responsible for the oversight, standardisation, and quality assurance of theoretical knowledge instruction. This role ensures that all training, instructors, and assessments are compliant with regulatory requirements, operationally relevant, and contribute to pilot competence and safe aircraft operations.
Key Responsibilities

Act as the nominated CTKI in accordance with ORA.ATO.210(c).

Maintain oversight of all theoretical knowledge instruction delivered within the BA ATO.

Serve as the primary contact for regulatory audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring activities.

Provide functional oversight of Theoretical Knowledge Instructors (TKIs) and uphold standards of theoretical knowledge instruction.

Conduct instructor observations, standardisation activities, and quality assurance reviews.

Promote consistent, accurate, and operationally relevant training delivery.

Maintain oversight of theoretical syllabi, training materials, and examinations, ensuring alignment with aircraft manufacturer data, company manuals, regulatory requirements, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Monitor assessment performance and identify areas for improvement.

Utilise training data, audit findings, and feedback to identify training system risks and opportunities for enhancement.

Ensure training effectively supports pilot competence, operational decision-making, and safe aircraft operations.

Drive continuous improvement in training effectiveness and standardisation.
Requirements

Demonstrable knowledge of UK CAA Aircrew and Air Operations regulatory requirements.

Extensive experience as a Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (TKI) in subjects relevant to the ATO's training offerings.

Strong understanding of Approved Training Organisation (ATO) governance, compliance monitoring, and training oversight.

Experience in developing, reviewing, or assuring pilot training programmes.

Regulatory and flight training understanding.

Proficiency in using training data to identify performance trends, systemic weaknesses, and improvement opportunities.

Strong working knowledge of ATO regulatory frameworks.

Demonstrated behaviours consistent with accountable leadership under regulatory oversight.

Ability to engage confidently and transparently with authorities.

Extensive instructional experience within flight training.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability in driving continual improvement of training systems.
Desirable Qualifications

Current or previous Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) recognised by the UK CAA.

Current or previous Licence Application Examiner (LAE) recognised by the UK CAA.

Previous experience as a CTKI, Deputy CTKI, or in a similar post holder role.

Experience with examination and assessment governance.
