British Airways, the UK's flag carrier airline, is seeking a Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (CTKI) for its Approved Training Organisation (ATO) based in London. This role is responsible for the oversight, standardisation, and quality assurance of theoretical knowledge instruction to ensure compliance and operational relevance in pilot training.

About the Role

The Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (CTKI) serves as the CAA-approved post holder responsible for ensuring the theoretical knowledge training and assessment delivered within the British Airways ATO remains compliant, operationally relevant, and effective. The CTKI provides oversight for all theoretical knowledge instructors and training materials, ensuring they align with regulatory requirements and support safe aircraft operation and pilot competence.

Responsibilities

• Act as the nominated CTKI, providing oversight of all theoretical knowledge instruction.
• Serve as the primary contact for regulatory audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring.
• Maintain instructional standards for Theoretical Knowledge Instructors (TKIs).
• Conduct instructor observations, standardisation activities, and quality assurance reviews.
• Oversee theoretical syllabi, training materials, and examinations, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, aircraft manufacturer data, and company manuals.
• Monitor assessment performance and identify areas for improvement.
• Utilise training data and feedback to identify training system risks and opportunities for enhancement.
• Ensure training effectively supports pilot competence, operational decision-making, and safe aircraft operation.
• Drive continuous improvement in training effectiveness and standardisation.

Requirements

• Demonstrable knowledge of UK CAA Aircrew and Air Ops regulatory requirements.
• Extensive experience as a Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (TKI) in relevant subjects.
• Strong understanding of ATO governance, compliance monitoring, and training oversight.
• Experience in developing, reviewing, or assuring pilot training programmes.
• Regulatory and flight training understanding.
• Ability to use training data to identify performance trends and improvement opportunities.
• Strong working knowledge of ATO regulatory frameworks.
• Behaviors consistent with accountable leadership under regulatory oversight.
• Confidence and transparency when engaging with authorities.
• Extensive instructional experience within flight training.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical, auditing, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to influence and provide technical leadership without direct line management authority.
• Experience in setting and maintaining instructional standards.
• Experience in driving continual improvement of the training system.

Desirable Qualifications

• Current or previous ATPL recognised by the UK CAA.
• Current or previous LAE recognised by the UK CAA.
• Previous CTKI, Deputy CTKI, or similar post holder role.
• Experience with examination and assessment governance.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a prior approval interview with the UK Civil Aviation Authority, and appointment is conditional upon obtaining and maintaining UK CAA approval for the role.
