AOPA, a leading aviation organization, is seeking a talented and passionate Aviation Writer to join its team in Frederick, MD, USA. This full-time, on-site role involves creating high-volume, engaging content focused on general aviation news, advocacy, community stories, and aircraft for the organization's magazines and website.
About the Role
The Aviation Writer will be instrumental in informing, inspiring, and connecting the general aviation (GA) community through compelling narratives. This dynamic role requires a blend of journalistic rigor, creative storytelling, and a deep understanding of aviation. Key responsibilities include:

Ideation:
Independently pitching stories aligned with organizational priorities and audience interests, drawing insights from personal flying experiences, and actively participating in collaborative brainstorming sessions.

Reporting:
Conducting thorough research, interviews, and observations to gather information on the aviation community, GA experiences, destinations, and various GA airplanes. This includes networking with internal and external stakeholders and coordinating with photographers and videographers for content acquisition.

Writing and Content Creation:
Producing engaging, original content daily, weekly, and monthly for both print and online platforms, employing standard newswriting techniques and diverse story structures. Fact-checking for accuracy is paramount.

Editing and Production:
Collaborating with art staff to ensure visual and textual alignment, and editing content for accuracy and style.

Secondary functions may include facilitating air-to-air photography, appearing on camera for multi-platform storytelling, assisting with digital or print production, and potentially managing sweepstakes promotions or reviewing freelance submissions.
Requirements
Candidates for the Aviation Writer position must demonstrate a strong foundation in both writing and aviation. Essential qualifications include:

A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of multi-channel media experience.

Possession of a Sport Pilot certificate or a higher-level pilot certificate.

Excellent knowledge of grammar and familiarity with AP and/or Chicago style guides.
