Job Summary
The Managing Editor oversees daily editorial operations for AOPA Pilot, AOPA Pilot: Turbine Edition, and Flight Training magazines. The incumbent is responsible for the timely delivery of print and digital content, editorial quality assurance, and workflow optimization. This role involves close collaboration with design, photography, and video teams to maintain high visual and production standards, while managing freelance contributors and editorial guidelines.
Essential Functions

Leadership and Performance Management:
Guide production processes, lead team meetings, manage direct reports, conduct performance reviews, and identify training needs.

Workforce Planning:
Lead recruitment, onboarding, and workload management to ensure departmental strategy alignment and productivity.

Editorial Oversight:
Manage digital content workflows, perform rigorous editing and proofreading, enforce house style guidelines (AP/Chicago), and facilitate collaborative brainstorming.

Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities for automation, integrate new technology solutions, and update workflows to support cross-platform storytelling.

Administrative:
Maintain production calendars, project management software, editorial contracts, and ensure team compliance with organizational policies.
Secondary Functions
The Managing Editor may pitch and report stories, produce original content, and operate photography/action camera equipment for content gathering purposes.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Minimum of five years of multi-channel media experience.

Expert knowledge of grammar and AP and/or Chicago stylebooks.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign.

Aptitude for navigating project management platforms and CMS software.

Demonstrated ability to lead multiple teams under strict deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications

Major in English, Journalism, or a relevant humanities discipline.

Possession of a Sport pilot certificate or higher.

Experience within the General Aviation (GA) lifestyle and familiarity with industry issues and major companies.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
This is an on-site position based in Frederick, MD, with typical hours of 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The role requires up to 15% travel via aircraft and ground transportation for industry events. Physical requirements include extended periods of sitting, manual dexterity for office equipment, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $90,000, commensurate with experience and education. Comprehensive benefits include:
