Job Description

Electra is actively seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Test Pilot to join its professional, high-performing flight team. Based in Manassas, Virginia, this hands-on role offers an unparalleled opportunity to directly influence the future of aviation and advanced air mobility. The Test Pilot will be instrumental in the development and piloting of Electra's innovative two-seat prototype and future nine-passenger hybrid-electric, blown-wing UltraShort (eSTOL) aircraft. The primary objective is to accurately and repeatedly pilot experimental technical demonstrators and other products to supply cost-effective data to the engineering group. Beyond core piloting duties, the role encompasses standard test pilot responsibilities related to flight testing and certification, including the development of user interfaces, operating procedures, and training programs. This position also involves supporting the development, certification, and demonstration of Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) test and evaluation programs.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Conduct experimental flight tests on Ultra Short take-off and landing (eSTOL) aircraft.
  • Collaborate closely with flight test engineering teams to meticulously develop comprehensive test plans, test cards, and test procedures.
  • Develop and meticulously maintain essential flight manuals, operational guidelines, checklists, and procedures.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in critical safety-of-flight and flight readiness review boards.
  • Ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and in strict accordance with established company and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) procedures.
  • Maintain current flying currency and proficiency across multiple aircraft types.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support flight operations and aircraft development.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience as a flight test engineer or test pilot, directly related to the flight evaluation of crewed aircraft.

Required Skills

  • Possession of a Commercial Pilot License with Single-Engine and Multi-Engine Land ratings, and an Instrument Rating.
    • Valid FAA Class II Medical Certificate, without limitations.
  • A minimum total flight time of:
    • 1500 hours in aircraft.
    • 100 hours turbine.
  • Minimum Pilot-in-Command (PIC) time of:
    • 1000 hours in the airplane category.
    • 100 hours testing experimental aircraft.
  • Graduation from a long-course recognized test pilot school or a minimum of five years of equivalent experimental test pilot experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk management, including proficient hazard identification and the preparation of comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Proven experience with experimental aircraft certification and testing processes.
  • Thorough familiarity with standard flight test processes and procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the FAA civil certification process.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of proactive delivery and follow-up.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to independently prioritize tasks and effectively accomplish work within established time constraints.
  • A strong work ethic and the capacity to independently execute responsibilities and essential functions.
  • Excellent organizational, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a high-performing team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience collaborating with the FAA, along with familiarity with aircraft, helicopter, or powered lift FAA certification programs.
  • Prior experience supporting the envelope expansion of new model aircraft.
  • Experience with formation flying, flight training, and media demonstration flights.
  • Proficiency in developing and/or optimizing simulators, ground control stations, and training equipment.
  • Experience in developing advanced digital flight control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in flight testing rapid prototype aircraft and components.
  • Proven ability to thrive and contribute effectively within fast-paced, small team environments.

Travel

This position may require up to 50% domestic and international travel.

Salary

The salary range for this position at Electra is between $160,000 and $200,000 annually. Individual compensation is determined by various factors, including project budgets, job-related skills, extensive experience, relevant education and/or training, specific role responsibilities, level within the organization, location, and project requirements. The stated range reflects the minimum and maximum compensation for the company level across all locations and projects, and does not necessarily represent the budgeted amount for this specific position.
