The Role
Supernal seeks an accomplished Experimental VTOL Test Pilot to join its high-performing Flight Test team. Working alongside fellow test pilots, flight test engineers, mechanics, and support staff, this individual will play a crucial role in supplying precise and reliable data to engineering teams.
This position offers the unique opportunity to pilot cutting-edge eVTOL aircraft, contributing to the advancement of a revolutionary form of mobility. Beyond piloting, the role encompasses a range of responsibilities inherent to experimental flight testing, including test plan development, operational procedure creation, and participation in safety reviews.
Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental flight tests in eVTOL aircraft.
- Collaborate with flight test engineers to develop comprehensive test plans, test cards, and procedures based on engineering requirements.
- Create and maintain flight manuals, operational guidelines, checklists, and procedures.
- Spearhead and actively participate in flight safety and readiness review boards.
- Meticulously document all procedures and findings in accordance with company and FAA regulations.
- Maintain flight currency and proficiency across multiple aircraft types.
- Be available for up to 50% domestic and international travel.
- Undertake other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field (Master's degree in flight test engineering or a related field is preferred).
- A minimum of ten years of experience in engineering.
- A minimum of five years of experience as an Experimental Test Pilot (equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
- Graduation from a recognized Test Pilot School or equivalent experience.
- FAA Class II Medical Certificate.
- Commercial pilot license.
- 1000+ hours of Pilot-in-Command (PIC) experience in VTOL aircraft.
- Proven experience with Risk Management, including Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment preparation.
- Experience with Uninhabited Aerial System (UAS) certification and testing.
- Strong understanding of standard flight test processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of the FAA civil certification process.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proactive communication style and strong follow-up.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to independently prioritize and manage tasks effectively within time constraints.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (including VLOOKUP and pivot tables) and the MS Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in flight testing Uninhabited Aerial Systems (UAS).
- Familiarity with FAA regulations and experience with aircraft, helicopter, or powered lift FAA certification programs.
- Experience in flight testing rotorcraft aircraft.
- Experience in flight testing eVTOL aircraft.
- Experience flying tilt-rotor aircraft.
- Experience operating light transport helicopters and/or aircraft.
- Experience with formation flying with UAS.
- Experience with formation flying, flight training, and media demonstrations.
- Experience in developing/optimizing simulators/ground control station and training equipment.
- Experience in developing digital flight control systems.
- Experience flight testing rapid prototype aircraft and components.
- Experience working effectively in fast-paced, small team environments.
- Familiarity with EDW airspace.
Compensation and Benefits
Supernal offers a competitive salary range of $204,200 - $260,700 USD for this position, commensurate with skills, experience, and location. This role is also eligible for a bonus as part of the total compensation package.
