About the Role

The Test Pilot will be instrumental in establishing and executing the core functions of MightyFly's flight test program. Key responsibilities include preparing experimental Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for flight, serving as Pilot in Command for flight tests, meticulously planning missions to support the flight test team, logging all flights, and delivering comprehensive debriefings. The Test Pilot is accountable for briefing crew members and upholding the highest standards of flight safety. Additional duties involve collaborating with the team to develop concepts of operations, coordinating with airport officials, assessing the readiness of future pilots, and supporting the inaugural pilot launch. Opportunities may also arise to collaborate with engineering and build teams, providing valuable input on design features and assisting in the construction of airframes and subsystems.

This position is predominantly field-based, requiring work away from the office. Current flight testing activities are conducted at a regional airport near Tracy, California, with limited infrastructure. Demonstration flights will extend to various locations across the United States, where the Test Pilot will play a pivotal role in operational logistics. Flight testing often necessitates early morning starts and operations in challenging weather conditions, offering a highly satisfying and exhilarating experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform test flights from the ground station as Pilot in Command for both Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) and Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations.
  • Execute flight test activities, including mission planning, flight briefings, and flight test safety reviews.
  • Conduct and maintain pre- and post-flight inspections of UAVs.
  • Manage the upkeep and readiness of the test site facility.
  • Provide crucial feedback to the software team by testing user interface elements and conducting simulations of various real-world conditions and failure scenarios.
  • Gain proficiency with aircraft performance through simulator training.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop concepts of operations and training manuals.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to perform, analyze, and conduct ground testing.
  • Contribute to the assembly and construction of MightyFly aircraft.
  • Play a significant role in the launch of the pilot program.
  • Assist with FAA documentation requirements.
  • Support ongoing aircraft maintenance.

Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Possess a current Commercial Pilot License (CPL).
  • Demonstrate experience flying large UAVs or Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft (exceeding 55 pounds).
  • Hold a Part 107 Certificate.
  • Exhibit proficiency with computers, high-tech hardware, and software applications.
  • Comfortable with trailers, towing operations, and performing basic automotive preventive maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Familiarity with aviation certification standards and processes.
  • Military service background with experience piloting large-scale UAVs.
  • Flight instructional experience.
  • Experience working with electric and combustion engine aircraft.
  • Comfortable performing routine General Aviation (GA) maintenance.
  • One or more years of experience flying radio-controlled (RC) model aircraft.
