Group Overview - Special Air Missions (SAM)

The Special Air Missions (SAM) Group is responsible for developing and delivering Metrea’s core airborne capabilities, including Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), Special Mobility, and Aerial Firefighting (AFF). SAM oversees the critical integration of new mission systems, guaranteeing exceptional operational readiness across specialized aviation operations. The group meticulously manages fleet maintenance, regulatory compliance, and strategic partnerships, thereby significantly enhancing mission effectiveness. By centralizing expertise and infrastructure, SAM ensures that Metrea’s airborne capabilities remain highly adaptable and fully mission-ready across dynamic operational environments throughout Europe and globally.

Position Summary

Metrea is seeking a highly qualified and experienced King Air Captain to serve as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of a turbo-prop aircraft within Europe. This critical role involves operating the aircraft in strict adherence to UK CAA, FAA, and EASA policies, alongside Metrea’s Aviation Operations Europe Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Captain is responsible for all aspects of flight planning, rigorous aircraft pre-flight inspections, and essential coordination with company site leads and aircrew to ensure seamless mission execution and operational success across diverse and often challenging environments.

Key Role and Responsibilities

The King Air Captain (PIC) will execute the following primary duties:

  • Operate a King Air 300 aircraft in compliance with EASA, CAA, FAA, and specific company/customer directives as the designated Pilot-in-Command.
  • Maintain continuous monitoring of airspace, dynamic weather conditions, radio communications, mission flight boundaries, other air traffic, and all critical aircraft systems.
  • Coordinate all flight movements with relevant Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), Air Traffic Control (ATC) facilities (both military and civilian), Company Site Leads, and Mission Coordination Services.
  • Ensure exceptionally safe, effective, and efficient flight operations, including the proactive identification of aircraft system malfunctions and the swift execution of required corrective actions.
  • Conduct essential Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) flights under diverse operational conditions, including day, night, and all-weather (within defined safety limits).
  • Demonstrate the capability to operate effectively from remote, austere locations, including unimproved runways, maintaining mission readiness under field conditions.
  • Complete all necessary flight documentation accurately and promptly, adhering rigorously to applicable industry and EASA/CAA/FAA standards.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • A minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications), which must include English and Mathematics.
  • A-Levels or equivalent further education is highly desirable.

Aviation Experience Requirements

Candidates must meet the following minimum flight time thresholds:

  • Minimum 1500 hours total flight time.
  • Minimum 1000 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
  • Minimum 200 hours of night flight time.
  • Minimum 500 hours of cross-country flight time.
  • Minimum 500 hours PIC flight time in multi-engine, turboprop aircraft.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • A valid FAA Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with a multi-engine (AMEL) rating and Instrument rating (IR), OR an FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) license with a multi-engine land (AMEL) rating.
  • A valid UK CAA or EASA Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with an Instrument Rating (IR), OR an Airline Transport Pilots License (ATPL) with an Instrument Rating (IR).
  • Must hold and maintain a valid UK/EASA/FAA Class 1 Medical Certificate (1st Class FAA medical).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid UK or EU passport.

Desirable Experience and Certifications

Preference will be given to candidates possessing:

  • A valid FAA BE300 Type Rating.
  • A valid UK or EASA BE300/1900 Type Rating.
  • Previous commercial special missions, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) experience.

Deployment and Work Environment

This is a full-time position. Employment is strictly contingent upon the successful completion of all required training, comprehensive background checks, and necessary security clearances. Working hours and shift patterns will vary significantly in line with demanding operational schedules to maximize mission effectiveness and ensure customer satisfaction.

The role involves rotational deployments across Europe, consisting of mixed deployment lengths on assignment followed by a similar period off rotation. The primary home base of operations will be the UK and Europe.

During deployment, employees must be prepared to live and work under field conditions, operating with minimal supervision in austere or arduous environments. The work environment is a mix of deployed operational areas and office-based settings, varying based on specific mission contracts. Extensive worldwide travel is required as dictated by mission contracts; all candidates must possess and maintain a valid passport.
