First Officer - Aviation Operations
Job Overview
FlySafair seeks a highly skilled and dedicated First Officer to join its dynamic flight operations team. The First Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the utmost safety and efficiency of every flight, upholding the company's commitment to excellent customer service and operational excellence. This position requires a deep understanding of aviation regulations, advanced piloting skills, and the ability to work collaboratively under Captain's command.
Key Responsibilities
Core Operations
- Ensure flight safety is maintained in a timely and effective manner.
- Continuously monitor the aircraft's flight path and systems performance.
- Execute comprehensive pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks and procedures.
- Maintain clear and professional communication with internal departments, external service providers, and passengers.
- Navigate and operate the aircraft proficiently.
- Ensure strict adherence to all applicable aviation regulations and company policies.
- Uphold the company's core competitive edge through the delivery of excellent customer service.
- Submit accurate and complete legal administrative documentation as required.
- Assume command of the aircraft in the event of the Captain's incapacitation.
Assisting the Captain and Crew
- Stay consistently updated with applicable SACAA and international aviation laws, and company Operations Manuals.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of relevant provisions within the company Operations Manual to effectively fulfill duties.
- Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties related to the flight as requested.
- Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, professional behaviour, and personal appearance.
- Volunteer advice, information, and assistance to the Captain that contributes to the safe and efficient conduct of the flight.
- Support the Captain in fostering and maintaining a high standard of professional expertise and morale amongst the crew.
Flight Execution
- Execute duties concerning the flight in strict accordance with FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including aircraft-specific procedures, limitations, and performance parameters.
- Undertake additional duties as allocated by the Captain.
- Confirm the safe navigation of the aircraft, maintaining a continuous and independent check on geographical position and safe terrain clearance.
- Maintain a high personal standard of discipline, conduct, and appearance as a representative of the Company.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with the company's Operations Manual at all times.
Pre-Flight Duties
- Possess complete awareness of the planned flight route, briefing sheets, and forecast conditions, including runway states at destination and alternate aerodromes.
- Perform all checks stipulated in the Operations Manual and accurately complete all required documentation.
- Collaborate effectively with the Captain to review all necessary documents and information for informed decision-making regarding fuel, alternates, and flight restrictions.
In-Flight Duties
- Perform or monitor the execution of all normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as specified in the Operations Manual, ensuring their proper completion.
- Monitor all aspects of the flight, verifying correct procedures and techniques, crosschecking flight instrument indications (particularly altitude, speed, and heading).
- Immediately advise the Captain of any deviation from the planned flight path, the onset of a hazardous situation, or any detected abnormal instrument readings, warning lights, or indicators.
- Conduct Radio Telephony (R/T) communications as and when required.
Post-Flight Duties
- Ensure completion of all post-flight procedures as per the Operations Manual (OM) and Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM).
- Submit all relevant documentation and/or reports, such as those for the Integrated Quality and Safety Management System (IQSMS).
Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- SACAA Commercial Pilot License (Essential).
- SACAA ATPL (Preferred).
- Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential).
- Type rating on Boeing aircraft (Advantageous).
- Experience on Commercial Jets over 20 Tons (Advantageous).
- Minimum of 1500 total flight hours, including 500 Multi-Turbine hours, or non-type rated with Boeing type rating (Essential).
- Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) experience (Essential).
- No existing disqualifying medical conditions.
- Willingness to sign applicable training bonds.
- No criminal record.
- Willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
- Own transport and a valid RSA Driver's License.
- South African Citizenship with proof of identity.
- Willingness to undergo psychometric assessments.
- Valid RSA Passport.
- Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster basis.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of National Aviation Regulations, including SACAA and ICAO standards.
- Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8186 (Essential).
- Understanding of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing content.
