About the Role
FlySafair invites applications from highly skilled and dedicated aviation professionals for the position of First Officer. Based in Johannesburg (JHB), this permanent, skilled-level role is crucial to maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and customer service. The First Officer operates in a dynamic multi-crew environment, supporting the Captain and ensuring compliance with all national and international aviation regulations and company procedures.
Key Responsibilities
General Operations
- Ensure the absolute safety of flight operations and timely execution of all flights.
- Continuously monitor aircraft flight path and systems, performing comprehensive checks and procedures before, during, and after each flight.
- Maintain effective communication channels with internal departments, external service providers, and passengers.
- Proficiently navigate and operate the aircraft in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure strict compliance with all applicable aviation regulations and company policies.
- Uphold FlySafair's core competitive edge by delivering excellent customer service.
- Complete and submit accurate and thorough legal administrative documentation.
- Be prepared to assume command of the aircraft in the event of Captain incapacitation.
Professional Development & Support
- Stay rigorously updated with all applicable SACAA and international aviation laws, as well as company Operations Manuals.
- Maintain an in-depth familiarity with the company Operations Manual provisions essential for the role.
- Provide comprehensive operational and administrative support to the Captain for all flight-related duties.
- Actively contribute to maintaining high standards of crew discipline, behaviour, and personal appearance.
- Proactively offer advice, information, and assistance to the Captain to enhance flight safety and efficiency.
- Support the Captain in fostering a high standard of professional expertise and morale amongst the crew.
Pre-Flight Duties
- Thoroughly review and comprehend the planned flight route, briefing sheets, and all relevant forecast conditions, including runway states at destination and alternate aerodromes.
- Execute all pre-flight checks and complete required documentation as outlined in the Operations Manual.
- Collaborate with the Captain to review all documents and information necessary for informed decision-making regarding fuel selection, alternate aerodromes, and potential flight restrictions.
In-Flight Duties
- Perform or vigilantly monitor the execution of all normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as specified in the Operations Manual, ensuring their proper completion.
- Monitor all aspects of the flight, confirming correct procedures and techniques are used, cross-checking all flight instrument indications (especially altitude/height, speed, and heading).
- Immediately advise the Captain of any deviation from the planned flight path, onset of hazardous situations, or detection of abnormal instrument readings, warning lights, or indicators.
- Conduct R/T (Radio Telephony) communications efficiently as required.
Post-Flight Duties
- Ensure all post-flight procedures are completed as per the Operations Manual (OM) and Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM).
- Submit all relevant documentation and reports, including through systems like IQSMS, in a timely manner.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Licensing:
- SACAA Commercial Pilot License (CPL) (Essential)
- SACAA Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) (Preferred)
- Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential)
- Aircraft Type & Experience:
- Type rating on Boeing aircraft (Advantageous)
- Minimum of 1500 total flying hours, including at least 500 hours Multi-Turbine time (Essential)
- Experience on Commercial Jets over 20 Tons (Advantageous)
- Multi-Crew experience (Essential)
- Compliance & Knowledge:
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of National Aviation Regulations (SACAA, ICAO).
- Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8186 (Essential).
- Knowledge of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilots licensing content.
- Additional Requirements:
- No existing medical conditions that would preclude holding a Class 1 Medical.
- Willingness to sign applicable training bond(s).
- Clean criminal record.
- Willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
- Valid RSA Driver’s License and own transport.
- South African Citizen with valid proof of identity.
- Willingness to undergo psychometric assessments.
- Valid RSA Passport.
- Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster basis.
