Junior First Officer

Job Summary

The Junior First Officer is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient conduct of flights, adhering to all regulations and company policies. This role involves monitoring flight paths and aircraft systems, performing pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks, and communicating effectively with various stakeholders. The Junior First Officer will also assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties, uphold company standards for customer service, and maintain accurate documentation. In the event of the Captain's incapacitation, the Junior First Officer will assume command.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe and efficient flight operations in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the flight path and systems of the aircraft.
  • Perform pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks and procedures.
  • Communicate with internal departments, external service providers, and passengers.
  • Navigate and operate the aircraft inflight.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, company policies, and procedures.
  • Uphold the company's core competitive edge of excellent customer service.
  • Submit accurate and comprehensive administrative documentation.
  • Identify safety threats and collaborate with the Captain and Operations for solutions.
  • Assume command in the event of the Captain's incapacitation.
  • Stay updated with applicable SACAA and international aviation laws, and company Operations Manuals.
  • Maintain familiarity with provisions of the company Operations Manual necessary for the function.
  • Assist the Captain as requested with operational and administrative duties.
  • Assist the Captain in upholding high standards of crew discipline, behavior, and personal appearance.
  • Carry out duties concerning the flight in accordance with FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including procedures, limitations, and performance for the specific aircraft type.
  • Confirm safe navigation of the aircraft, maintaining continuous and independent checks on geographical position and safe terrain clearance.
  • Volunteer advice, information, and assistance to the Captain to favorably contribute to the safe and efficient conduct of the flight.
  • Maintain high personal standards of discipline, conduct, and appearance as a representative of the Company.
  • Support the Captain in developing and maintaining high standards of professional expertise and morale amongst the crew.
  • Ensure compliance with the company's Operations Manual at all times.
  • Be fully aware of the planned flight route, briefing sheets, and forecast conditions at destination and alternate aerodromes.
  • Perform all checks outlined in the Operations Manual and complete all required documents.
  • Collaborate with the Captain to review documents and information for informed decisions on fuel selection, alternates, and restrictions.
  • Perform or monitor execution of normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as specified in the Operations Manual, FCOM, and FCTM.
  • Monitor all aspects of the flight, ensuring correct procedures and techniques are used.
  • Cross-check all flight instrument indications, especially altitude/height, speed, and heading.
  • Advise the Captain immediately if the aircraft deviates from the planned flight path, a hazardous situation is observed, or any abnormal instrument reading, warning light, or indicator is detected.
  • Conduct R/T communications as and when required.
  • Ensure all post-flight procedures are completed as per the OM and FCOM.
  • Submit all relevant documentation and/or reports, such as IQSMS.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or Equivalent (Essential)
  • SACAA Commercial Pilot License (Essential)
  • Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential)
  • SACAA ATPL (Preferred)
  • Type rated on Boeing (Advantageous)
  • Minimum of 1000 total flying hours AND a minimum of 500 Twin Turbine (P1/2) (<10,000kg) (Essential)
  • OR Minimum of 1000 total flying hours AND Boeing / Airbus Type Rated (Including Level D sim time) (Essential)
  • OR Minimum of 1000 total flying hours AND a minimum of 250 hours on Jet/Turbine (>10,000kg) (Essential)
  • Willingness to sign applicable training bond(s)
  • No criminal record
  • Own transport and RSA Driver’s License
  • SA Citizen with proof of Identity
  • Valid RSA Passport
  • Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of National Aviation regulations such as SACAA, ICAO (Essential)
  • Knowledge of Doc 8168 (Essential)
  • Knowledge of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot Licensing content
  • Language proficiency Level 6
