Airline Pilot / First Officer - Eligibility Requirements
This document outlines the essential qualifications and experience required for aspiring aviation professionals seeking a challenging role as an Airline Pilot or First Officer. Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic foundation, possess the necessary flight credentials, and meet specific flight experience benchmarks to be considered for this critical position.
Educational Foundation & Academic Proficiency
- Candidates are required to hold a Matric Certificate, Grade 12 results, N3 qualification, or an equivalent SAQA-accredited tertiary qualification.
- Academic proficiency must include a minimum of a D symbol on the higher grade or a C symbol on the standard grade in both Mathematics or Statistics 101, and English.
- Additionally, applicants must have achieved a minimum of a D symbol on the higher grade or a C symbol on the standard grade in either Physical Science or Computer Science.
Flight Crew Licensing & Ratings
- Applicants must possess a valid South African Airline Transport Pilot’s License (ATPL).
- Alternatively, candidates holding a valid South African Commercial Pilot License (CPL) who have successfully completed all ATPL ground subjects (previously known as a 'Frozen ATPL') are eligible.
- A critical requirement is the acquisition of a full, valid ATPL, inclusive of a multi-engine instrument rating, within four years from the date of employment with SAA.
Medical Certification
- A valid Class 1 medical certificate is compulsory and must be maintained throughout employment.
Flight Experience
- A minimum of 1,500 total flying hours is required.
- This total must include at least 200 hours of multi-engine aircraft experience.
Citizenship & Documentation
- Applicants must be South African citizens and possess a valid South African Passport.
