Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) - Helicopter Aircrew Training System
Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) invites applications for a Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) to join its esteemed Aircrew Training Capability in Nowra, NSW, commencing in 2025. This pivotal role contributes to the Helicopter Aircrew Training System (HATS), utilising the EC135 T2+ helicopter. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in delivering ab-initio helicopter flight instruction to aspiring pilots.
Responsibilities:
The QFI will be responsible for a comprehensive range of training activities, including:
- Delivering ab-initio flight instruction on the EC-135 T2+ aircraft.
- Conducting comprehensive ground instruction, including briefings and lectures.
- Operating training aircraft and equipment (both live and synthetic devices).
- Maintaining meticulous trainee records and providing regular progress reports to the Pilot Training Officer.
- Providing mentorship and guidance to trainees throughout their training journey.
- Reviewing trainee progress during ground training events and assessments.
- Maintaining accurate aircraft records.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant Standing Instructions and Special Flying Instructions regarding aircrew qualifications and currency.
- Supporting 723 SQN tasking through the undertaking of secondary missions as required.
- Providing comprehensive flying supervision to trainees.
- Reviewing and recommending improvements to training packages and courseware.
- Providing support for Joint Helicopter School (JHS) Winching and Load Lifting Training evolutions.
- Performing additional duties as assigned by the Pilot Training Officer.
- Delivering clear and concise written and verbal pre-briefs and debriefs to students.
- Participating in external evaluations, including safety-related investigations.
- Assisting the HATS Training Manager with BDA-related activities as needed.
- Adhering to the JHS Occupational Injury and Prevention (OIP) program to maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential Criteria:
- Current CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate and the ability to maintain its requirements.
- CASA Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) – CPL(H) (minimum).
- CASA Command Instrument Rating (Helicopter), or military equivalent.
- CASA Night Visual Flight Rules Rating, or military equivalent.
- CASA Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) rating, or military equivalent.
- CASA Sling Load and Winching Operations Endorsement, or military equivalent.
- CASA Flying Instructor (Helicopter) Grade 2 rating, or military equivalent.
- TAE40122 or current TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or the ability to obtain.
- Category C rotary wing Qualified Flying Instructor or greater.
- Proven military flight instruction experience.
- Demonstrated experience with helicopter NVD formation flying.
- Minimum 250 hours of NVD flight operations.
- Previous Day and Night Deck Landing Qualification (DLQ).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, demonstrable in stressful flying environments.
- Current Competency Standard HLTAID003 – Provide first aid.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Demonstrated capacity to foster positive working relationships with colleagues to achieve team, business unit, and organisational objectives.
- Working knowledge of Workplace/Occupational Health and Safety procedures.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Defence security clearance.
Desirable Criteria:
- Ab-initio flying experience.
- EC135 flying experience.
- Category B rotary wing Qualified Flying Instructor or greater.
- Instructional experience using synthetic devices.
- Experience in a safety management role.
- Experience working in a contractor environment (directly with the customer).
