Pilot Cadet Pathway Program - First Officer Development
Spirit Airlines offers the Spirit Wings & Spirit Direct Pilot Pathway programs, providing pilots enrolled in select flight school or university program partnerships a direct route to the flight deck as a First Officer. This program is designed to mentor and prepare future Spirit Airlines pilots for a successful career.
Program Benefits:
Cadets accepted into the program receive significant support and resources:
- Mentorship, guidance, and training opportunities provided by members of the Spirit Flight Operations team throughout their time in the program.
- Issuance of a full Spirit Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), granting early access to training materials specifically designed for preparation for new hire training on the Airbus A320 series aircraft.
- Provision of Foreflight and Jeppesen Pro subscriptions by Spirit Airlines.
- Invitations to annual "Spirit Day" events, offering cadets opportunities to attend presentations, participate in training exercises, and meet with Flight Operations leadership.
Qualifications:
Candidates for the Pilot Cadet Pathway program must meet specific requirements based on their educational path:
Part 61 & 141 Flight School Requirements:
- A minimum of 500 hours total flight time.
- Possession of a Commercial Pilot Certificate.
- Submission of a recommendation from a partner school faculty member or chief instructor.
- Hold a current FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
- Possession of an FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
- Hold a valid passport and necessary documents with at least nine (9) months of validity remaining, granting the ability to travel in and out of the USA and all cities/countries currently or potentially served by Spirit Airlines.
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States.
University Program Requirements:
- Completion of the sophomore year in an accredited aviation degree program.
- Submission of a recommendation from a partner school faculty member or chief instructor.
- Hold a current FAA First Class Medical Certificate or demonstrate the ability to obtain one prior to enrolling in ATP/CTP and Jet Transition courses.
- Possession of an FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
- Hold a valid passport and necessary documents with at least nine (9) months of validity remaining, granting the ability to travel in and out of the USA and all cities/countries currently or potentially served by Spirit Airlines.
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States.
Selected candidates must successfully complete all program requirements and satisfy FAA regulations for either an Unrestricted ATP or Restricted ATP (for those in the university program). A final program review will be conducted. All cadets are required to complete the ATP/CTP course and a Spirit Specific A320 Jet Transition course before a new hire class date can be assigned. Prior to receiving a Spirit Airlines new hire pilot class date, cadets will undergo pre-employment testing and comprehensive background checks.
First Officer Responsibilities:
Upon transitioning to a First Officer role with Spirit Airlines, responsibilities include:
- Ensuring a safe and pleasant travel experience for all passengers.
- Assisting the Captain in the safe operation of the aircraft, adhering strictly to all Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company policies and procedures.
- Demonstrating a strong commitment to customer service and contributing a refreshing perspective to the airline industry.
- Performing other duties as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may be subject to change based on operational circumstances, such as emergencies, changes in workload, or technical developments.
