Job Overview

SAIC is seeking a part-time Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) to join the Controller Training Solutions (CTS) team at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, OK. This position supports air traffic controller training services for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Please note: This is not a UAS, UAV, RPV, or drone pilot position.

Role Responsibilities

The RPO facilitates medium and high-fidelity training exercises by acting as the pilot and other controller entities within an Air Traffic Controller training simulator. Primary duties include:

  • Operating a combination of simulated radar displays and voice communication systems to mimic pilot actions and remote ATC facility communications.
  • Inputting entries into automated systems based on student voice commands to simulate pilot actions.
  • Translating displayed information into appropriate ATC terminology.
  • Communicating with students via the Voice Communication System (VCS) using proper phraseology.

Successful candidates must complete required certifications, including a classroom-based test on airspace and procedures, and a lab-based performance certification covering all positions.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship is mandatory, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical materials, including diagrams and manuals.
  • Clear verbal communication skills with the ability to be easily understood.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment (e.g., instructors, instructional system designers, subject matter experts).
  • Prior experience or certification in an ATC Tower, TRACON, or En Route simulation lab.
  • Working knowledge of FAAO JO 7110.65.
  • Familiarity with pilot/controller communications and phraseology.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Basic familiarity with current technological tools (tablets, notebooks, applications).
  • Effective oral and written communication and team-building skills.
