Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) - FAA Air Traffic Controller Training

Location: Chicago TRACON (C90), Elgin, IL

Note: This position is not a UAS, UAV, RPV, or drone pilot role.

Position Overview

SAIC is seeking a dedicated Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) to join the Controller Training Solutions (CTS) team. This role is essential to supporting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by facilitating high-fidelity training exercises for air traffic controllers. The RPO operates simulated radar displays and voice communication systems to emulate the actions and communications of pilots and remote ATC facilities.

Successful candidates will be responsible for inputting data into automated systems, interpreting complex display information into standard ATC terminology, and communicating with students using precise aviation phraseology. Mandatory certification requirements include a classroom examination on airspace and procedures, as well as a practical laboratory certification across all operational positions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a pilot/controller proxy within air traffic controller training simulators.
  • Execute medium and high-fidelity training scenarios utilizing radar and voice communication systems.
  • Process voice commands from students and provide accurate, timely responses.
  • Maintain proper pilot-to-controller communication protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and manuals.
  • Clear verbal communication skills with the ability to be understood in high-pressure environments.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams (e.g., Quality Assurance, Instructional System Designers, Subject Matter Experts).
  • Previous certification or experience in an ATC Tower, TRACON, or En Route simulation lab.
  • Working knowledge of FAAO JO 7110.65.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Familiarity with modern technological tools such as tablets and mobile applications.
  • Prior experience or familiarity with pilot/controller communications and aviation phraseology.
  • Strong team-building, oral, and written communication skills.

Compensation

The target salary range for this position is $40,001 – $80,000, commensurate with experience and other relevant factors.
