Remote Pilot Operator (Part-Time) - Air Traffic Controller Training Support

Location: Aurora, IL (Chicago ARTCC - ZAU)

Overview:

SAIC is seeking a dedicated Part-time Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) to join its Controller Training Solutions (CTS) team. This role is situated at the Chicago ARTCC (ZAU) in Aurora, Illinois, providing vital support for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic controller training services. It is important to note that this position focuses exclusively on simulated air traffic environments and does NOT involve the operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV), or Drones.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) fulfills a critical function within the Air Traffic Controller training simulator, acting as the simulated pilot and other air traffic control facilities. The RPO operates a combination of a simulated radar display and a voice communication system to realistically portray the actions and communications of pilots and remote ATC facilities during both medium and high-fidelity training exercises. Key responsibilities include receiving and accurately processing voice commands from student controllers, inputting appropriate entries into the automated system to simulate pilot responses and actions, translating information displayed on the simulator into correct air traffic control terminology, and responding to students via the Voice Communication System (VCS) using proper aviation phraseology. Successful candidates will be required to complete and pass necessary certifications, including a classroom component assessing knowledge of airspace and procedures, and a laboratory component demonstrating proficiency as a Remote Pilot Operator across all simulation positions. This role directly contributes to the FAA's objective of maintaining a highly skilled and professional air traffic control workforce dedicated to ensuring public safety.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory, along with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Possession of a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated basic computer proficiency.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical materials such as diagrams and manuals.
  • Clear and understandable verbal communication skills.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience collaborating within a multidisciplinary team (e.g., with Multimedia Developers, Quality Assurance personnel, Instructional System Designers, Subject Matter Experts, or Instructors).
  • Previous experience and certification in an ATC Tower, TRACON, or En Route simulation laboratory setting is strongly desired, though not required.
  • Effective oral and written communication abilities.
  • A working knowledge of FAA Order JO 7110.65 is strongly desired, but not mandatory.
  • Effective team-building skills.
  • Proficiency with standard MS Office Suite applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
  • Basic familiarity with current technological tools such as tablets, notebooks, and applications.
  • Basic familiarity or prior experience with pilot/controller communications or phraseology.
