Position Summary
The First Officer plays a critical role in supporting the Aircraft Captain, ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient piloting of aircraft. This position involves comprehensive aircraft management duties, strict adherence to Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company policies, and contributing to Republic Airways' commitment to a reliable and exceptional passenger experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Captain on meticulous flight planning, utilizing all available weather information and reports in strict accordance with Company policies and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
- Conducts thorough preflight inspections and verifies aircraft airworthiness, ensuring full compliance with FARs and Company procedures.
- Assists the Captain in comprehensive flight and fuel planning to guarantee safe operations aligned with all regulatory and company guidelines.
- Operates the aircraft safely, proficiently, and effectively during designated duty periods, adhering to the Captain's instructions, FARs, and Company operational procedures.
- Maintains expert-level knowledge of all operated equipment, relevant FARs, operational manuals, policies, and procedures.
- Communicates critical flight information, including turbulent weather conditions or other operational factors, to both crew and passengers.
- Accurately completes the load manifest for each flight.
- Contributes to the airline's reputation for reliability and punctuality by assisting the Captain in meeting all designated report times, departure times, and minimum turn times.
- Provides support at the terminal, ensuring the proper handling of aircraft, passengers, baggage, and cargo.
- Upholds the highest standards of professionalism through appearance, conduct, and strict adherence to Company uniform dress code and Rules of Conduct as outlined in official manuals.
- Actively pursues continuous professional training and development to enhance performance and abilities.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Company and the Aircraft Captain.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must meet or exceed the minimum requirements for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (RATP) certificate.
- Successful completion of the ATP written examination is preferred.
- Candidates must meet current interview and hiring minimum age and flight hour requirements established by the FAA and Republic Airways.
- Eligibility for hire is contingent upon meeting hiring minimums within six months of the interview date, maintaining a clean certificate action record, having no misdemeanors or felonies since the interview date, and accepting a class date within six months of the interview date.
- Prior customer service experience, particularly within an aviation environment, is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Language Skills: Proficient ability to read, analyze, interpret, and quickly understand complex technical procedures and governmental regulations, especially under stressful or emergency conditions. Must effectively present information and respond to questions from management, dispatch, crew, passengers, air traffic control, and the general public. Fluent in English, including the ability to communicate and be understood via shouted verbal commands during emergency situations.
- Reasoning & Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and manage diverse variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled formats. Must maintain composure, think clearly, and react swiftly in all types of emergency situations, including but not limited to medical emergencies, aircraft decompression, emergency evacuations, fires, security threats, passenger disturbances, and turbulence.
- Decision Making: Possesses sound decision-making capabilities that align with strategic direction. While decisions are typically of medium range and significance, the ability to make critical, safety-of-flight impacting decisions is paramount. Must process information rapidly and respond positively during unexpected and/or serious situations, effectively controlling personal and emotional responses to act appropriately under high levels of stress.
Physical Demands
The First Officer role requires significant physical capabilities to successfully perform essential functions, including:
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and/or crawl.
- Capability to sit for extended periods without standing.
- Strength to lift or move items weighing up to 75 pounds at varying heights.
- Adherence to all visual acuity standards established by the FAA medical regulations.
- Clear auditory perception for verbal communications in person, over the telephone, and via headset amidst ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
- Possession of stamina for long duty days, sequential workdays, and frequent transitions between diverse temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.
- Freedom of movement within the aircraft to perform all required functions effectively and quickly in a confined environment.
- Ability to comfortably and safely sit in the pilot’s seat or assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened without modifications.
Work Environment
First Officers will operate in a dynamic and challenging environment characterized by:
- Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions within open-air hangars and on the flight line for prolonged durations.
- High noise levels requiring consistent use of a headset.
- A varied schedule that includes extended duty periods on sequential days, early mornings, nights, overnights, and weekends.
Travel Requirements
This position demands extensive travel, up to 100% of the time, encompassing nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays. Candidates must be prepared for extended hours, unpredictable scheduling with little notice, and a willingness to relocate based on the Company’s operational needs.
