Primary objective
-
The Chief Pilot is responsible for managing and co-ordinating all functions and responsibilities of the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services Air Wing.

Key duties and responsibilities
-
Enhance service delivery through operations and the effective utilisation of aircraft.
-
Ensure the operations of the work unit are contemporary and meet the changing demands of the agency.

Efficiently and effectively manage and maintain assets, resources and finances of the Air Wing.

Ensure application of aviation industry best practice in all Air Wing activities.
-
Ensure all aircraft are properly equipped, operated and maintained to the standards required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) orders and regulations.

Ensure pilots are appropriately trained and licensed, and maintain qualification currency per CASA regulations.

Ensure compliance with and enforcement of legislation and departmental policy in the workplace with respect to duty of care, work health and safety and equal opportunity.
Selection criteria
Essential
-
Hold a current Australian CPL or ATPL and a Command Instrument Rating.
-
A minimum of 2,000 hours flying experience as Pilot in Command and a minimum of 1,000 hours flying experience as Pilot in Command of a multi-engine aircraft or single engine turbine powered aircraft.

A minimum of 100 hours night flying experience as Pilot in Command.
-
Sound flying experience in tropical and remote area environments.
-
A Command Instrument Rating (SEA or MEA) with a minimum of three Instrument Proficiency Checks / Renewals.

CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate.
-
High level flying skills and airmanship together with a sound knowledge of aviation legislation and publications.

Relevant recent experience in single pilot operations
-
Experience in dealing with a wide range of human resource and staff management issues in the workplace.
-
Change management skills with experience in developing and refining aviation operating procedures in response to identified changes in technology and the operating environment.

Highly developed written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to produce high level quality communications.
Desirable
-
Experience in the operation of pressurised turbo-prop aircraft.
-
Pilatus PC-12NG Endorsement with a comprehensive and practical working knowledge of its operating systems.

Hold or have held Check & Training, or Endorsement and ATO Flight Examiner approvals.
-
Experience in complex aircraft defect reporting and troubleshooting processes, and liaison with engineering support personnel.

Knowledge of the processes and structure of the Northern Territory Police Fire and Emergency Services.
Further information
In addition to salary the Chief Pilot / Aviation Manager is entitled to 9.5% superannuation, 17% Consolidated Allowance and an Instrument Rating Allowance as part of the overall remuneration package. Additionally a market allowance is payable after completion of two years of service commencing at $5,000 and capped at $20,000 per annum and; through negotiation, a Chief Pilot Allowance of up to $10,000 per annum is payable.
