First Officer Boeing 747-400F - Martinair Cargo (employed by KLM)
Martinair Cargo operates critical cargo flights with a steadfast commitment to safety. The role involves executing flights for Martinair Cargo, where safety is the paramount priority. The First Officer contributes to maintaining a safe working environment alongside colleagues, engages in continuous self-reflection, and pursues ongoing professional development to consistently ensure successful and secure flight operations. Beyond safety, efficient flight execution is essential for achieving sustainability objectives and maintaining desired operational quality standards.
The successful candidate will be employed by KLM and assigned to Martinair's dedicated cargo operation. The position commences as a First Officer flying the Boeing 747-400F. Opportunities may also arise to undertake ancillary roles, such as acting as an instructor or contributing to the office organization, alongside flying duties.
Martinair Cargo seeks highly qualified candidates who meet the following criteria:
General Requirements:
- Minimum education: havo diploma or vocational technical degree (mbo+techniek) with English and Mathematics, or an equivalent foreign qualification.
- Possess a European passport.
- Height between 1.58 and 2.03 meters (leg length measurement is not performed).
- Demonstrate good proficiency in the Dutch language. Non-Dutch speakers must pass a B2 level European Framework exam prior to the selection procedure.
- Have no criminal record.
- Be free from restrictions on international travel.
- Preferably be a graduate of one of the following flight schools: KFA, NLS, CAE, EPST, MFA, or hold a Military Pilot License (MPL-A) from the Royal Netherlands Air Force/Navy.
Licenses, Certificates, Experience, and Competencies:
- Hold an EASA ATPL or frozen ATPL.
- Possess an unrestricted EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate.
- Have LPE English Level 6 proficiency.
- Hold a Radiotelephony (RT) License.
- Possess a valid Instrument Rating for multi-engine aeroplanes (IR(A) – ME).
- Hold an EASA MCC Certificate.
- Possess a valid type rating for a multi-pilot aeroplane.
- Be trained in Performance-Based Navigation (PBN).
- Be trained in Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT).
- Provide logbook evidence demonstrating:
- A minimum of 1000 hours on multi-engine aeroplanes with an MTOW > 5700kg (excluding cruise relief co-pilot time) OR equivalent experience as a military pilot.
- A minimum of 100 hours Pilot in Command (PIC).
- A minimum of 150 hours flown in commercial aviation within the 12 months preceding the application OR equivalent experience as a military pilot.
- Have no history of aviation incidents or accidents.

- Type rating and medical certificate must be valid for a minimum of three months at the time of employment.
- Medical certificate and license must be issued in the Netherlands or converted prior to potential employment. Costs associated with converting foreign documents are the candidate's responsibility.
Compensation and Benefits:
The salary structure is governed by the KLM-cargo collective labor agreement, with the specific level dependent on tenure and role. An indicative starting gross salary ranges from €5,600 to €7,000 per month, based on prior experience, excluding emoluments and pension contributions. As a pilot at Martinair Cargo, the employee can anticipate a predictable roster pattern (e.g., 9 days on/7 days off, or 8 days on/6 days off), a daily allowance while at a destination, a robust pension scheme, access to the highly beneficial KLM 'If Seat Available' (IPB) travel facility at reduced rates, discounts with insurance providers, and promising career advancement opportunities.
