Job Summary
The Flight Research team at Joby Aviation is seeking a proficient and experienced Remote Pilot to command research and development Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) platforms. This critical role requires a strong background in operating medium to large UAS, with the incumbent responsible for pilot-in-command duties during flight test operations within the National Airspace System. As part of a dynamic and agile team, this position will also encompass hands-on responsibilities with aircraft and ground support equipment, adherence to standard operating procedures, and essential pre- and post-test support for engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the remote pilot in command for various research and development aircraft platforms.
- Execute comprehensive preflight planning and thorough system inspections.
- Contribute to test planning activities and participate in test rehearsals.
- Prepare and submit post-flight reports, both internal and external.
- Collaborate effectively with crew members throughout preparation, execution, and post-test phases.
- Provide detailed feedback and actionable recommendations for system enhancements.
- Uphold stringent standard operating procedures and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Foster and maintain a robust safety culture.
Required Qualifications
- Possession of a Part 61 Private Pilot certificate with an Instrument rating.
- Hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate.
- Demonstrated experience operating Group 3 UAS.
- Proficiency in operating with manual (non-GPS) and/or augmented flight modes using a traditional RC controller interface for conventional takeoff and landing aircraft.
- Experience with fully automated remote flight operations.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and training.
- A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience.
- Significant UAS operational experience, with over 300 flight hours or more than 200 sorties, depending on specific platforms.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work extended hours and travel as necessary.
- Proficiency in reading and speaking English.
Export Control Compliance: This position is subject to US export control laws and regulations. Candidates must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15, which includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with specific UAS platforms relevant to Joby's research and development efforts.
Familiarity with advanced flight control systems and data acquisition tools.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation for this position comprises a base salary and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The anticipated base salary range for this role is $113,900 - $151,900 annually, with the final compensation determined by the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
