Gilead Sciences is seeking a Captain - Large Cabin to serve as Pilot in Command (PIC) for domestic and international flight operations based in San Jose, CA. About the Role
The Captain is responsible for the final authority and safe operation of company aircraft, ensuring all missions adhere to Federal Aviation Regulations, international operating requirements, and company policies. This role involves leading assigned flight crews, fostering a culture of safety and professionalism, and providing exceptional travel experiences for company executives and guests. The Captain will plan and oversee all aspects of flight preparation, including flight planning, aircraft performance analysis, weather evaluation, and international operating requirements.
Requirements

Currently reside within 2.5 hours of San Jose, CA, or be willing to relocate.

Exercise final authority and responsibility for the safe operation of assigned aircraft.

Conduct domestic and international flight operations in full compliance with company policies, FAA regulations, and applicable international aviation requirements.

Supervise, mentor, and lead assigned flight crew members, promoting effective Crew Resource Management (CRM) and a positive safety culture.

Plan and oversee all aspects of flight preparation, including flight planning, aircraft performance analysis, weather evaluation, fuel planning, aircraft readiness, required publications and onboard equipment, customs, immigration, permits, and international operating requirements, and airport and runway suitability.

Ensure all required flight documentation is complete, accurate, and current prior to departure.

Verify that all crew members and passengers possess the required travel documentation, including passports, visas, and other applicable entry requirements.

Ensure the safety, security, comfort, and service expectations of all passengers throughout each mission.

Make operational decisions that prioritize safety while balancing efficiency and customer service.

Maintain all required FAA certificates, type ratings, medical certification, training, and operational currency.

Participate in the department’s Safety Management System (SMS), including hazard identification, safety reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Support departmental projects, committees, and other assignments as directed by department leadership.

Represent the Flight Department with the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and customer service.

Ability to obtain and maintain worldwide travel eligibility, including a valid passport and visas as required.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, extended trips, and short-notice travel.

Ability to successfully complete company required background checks, security clearances, and recurrent training.

Ability to lift 50 pounds and move passenger baggage and aircraft supplies in accordance with company safety guidelines.

Ability to perform all essential duties in a dynamic operational environment while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and discretion.
Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and Eight Years' Experience OR Master's Degree and Six Years' Experience.

FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate required.

Current type rating in at least one aircraft operated by the Gilead Flight Department, or the ability to obtain one upon hire.

Current FAA First Class Medical Certificate required.

Flight Experience: 5,000 hours total flight time, 3,000 hours Pilot in Command, and 2,000 hours multi-engine turbine.

Gulfstream experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Aviation, Business, or a related field preferred.

Five years of corporate aviation experience preferred.

Significant international flight operations experience preferred.

Experience operating long-range business aircraft preferred.

Demonstrated leadership and Crew Resource Management (CRM) skills preferred.

Experience operating within a BASC/IS-BAO and Safety Management System (SMS) environment preferred.

Strong decision-making and risk management skills preferred.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service abilities preferred.

Experience supporting executive level passengers in a corporate aviation environment preferred.
