The U.S. Forest Service is seeking experienced Pilots to operate various aircraft models, including single and multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft, in diverse and challenging terrains for passenger and cargo transport, aerial supervision, and specialized missions. These positions are located across multiple regions within the U.S. Forest Service.
About the Role

Pilots a variety of aircraft models at low altitudes and varying speeds over difficult terrain during day and night conditions.

Serves as Pilot-In-Command (PIC) on single-engine land and multi-engine aircraft.

Acts as a technical advisor for aviation operations, including WCF and contract aircraft for project and fire management.

Performs basic systems inspections on aircraft to ensure readiness for flight operations.

Serves as an Aviation Contracting Officer's Technical Expert for airplane contracts and contract pilots, providing technical guidance.

Conducts air transport of agency personnel and cargo, aerial supervision, Leadplane operations, and delivery of smokejumpers and paracargo.

Gathers information, analyzes issues, and develops recommendations for complex organizational problems and policy implementation.
Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.

Must be able to pass a background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

Must have federal payments made by direct deposit.

Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.

Must be 18 years of age.

Must be willing to live/work in remote, volatile, and unpredictable locations.

Must be under age 40, or less than age 40 after subtracting months of qualifying Federal Service, or a veteran preference eligible over 40 requesting a waiver.

Must successfully complete a 1-year probationary period.
Qualifications

Must possess an FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings, OR a current and valid FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land rating.

Must possess a current FAA first or second-class medical certificate.

Minimum flight experience requirements vary by grade (GS-09, GS-11, GS-12) and include specific total flight hours, Pilot-In-Command (PIC) hours, multi-engine hours, night flight hours, instrument time, and hours within the preceding 12 months. All flight experience must be substantiated by flight logs.

For GS-12, may be required to obtain and maintain a current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate (Airplane) with Multi-Engine and Instrument Airplane Instruction ratings or military equivalent.
