First Officer - Flight Operations

About the Role

A prominent aviation company seeks a dedicated and skilled First Officer to join its flight operations team. This critical role ensures the safe, efficient, and timely conduct of all flights while upholding the highest standards of customer service and regulatory compliance. The First Officer will work collaboratively with the Captain to manage all phases of flight, from pre-flight preparation to post-flight duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure paramount flight safety in a timely manner.
  • Continuously monitor the aircraft's flight path and systems.
  • Execute comprehensive pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks and procedures.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal departments, external service providers, and passengers.
  • Navigate and operate the aircraft proficiently.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all applicable aviation regulations and company policies and procedures.
  • Uphold the company's core competitive edge through excellent customer service.
  • Submit accurate and complete legal administrative documentation.
  • Assume command of the aircraft in the event of the Captain's incapacitation.
  • Stay current with SACAA and international aviation laws, and the company's Operations Manual.
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant provisions of the Operations Manual to fulfill job functions.
  • Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties related to the flight.
  • Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, behavior, and personal appearance.
  • Execute assigned duties according to FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including specific aircraft type procedures, limitations, and performance.
  • Confirm safe navigation, maintaining continuous and independent checks on the aircraft's geographical position and safe terrain clearance.
  • Provide timely advice, information, and assistance to the Captain to contribute to the safe and efficient conduct of the flight.
  • Maintain a high personal standard of discipline, conduct, and appearance as a representative of the Company.
  • Support the Captain in fostering and maintaining high professional expertise and morale among the crew.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with the company's Operations Manual.

Pre-Flight Responsibilities

  • Maintain full awareness of the planned flight route, briefing sheets, and forecasts, including conditions and runway states at destination and alternate aerodromes.
  • Perform all checks as outlined in the Operations Manual and complete required documents accurately.
  • Collaborate with the Captain to review all necessary documents and information for informed decisions on fuel selection, alternates, and flight restrictions.

In-Flight Responsibilities

  • Perform or monitor the execution of all normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as per the Operations Manual, ensuring their proper completion.
  • Monitor all flight aspects, verifying correct procedures and techniques, crosschecking all flight instrument indications (especially altitude/height, speed, and heading).
  • Promptly advise the Captain of any deviation from the planned flight path, onset of hazardous situations, or detection of abnormal instrument readings, warning lights, or indicators.
  • Conduct Radio Telephony (R/T) communications as and when required.

Post-Flight Responsibilities

  • Ensure all post-flight procedures are completed in accordance with the Operations Manual (OM) and Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM).
  • Submit all relevant documentation and/or reports, such as IQSMS.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification (Essential).
  • SACAA Commercial Pilot License (Essential).
  • SACAA ATPL (Preferred).
  • Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential).
  • Type rating on Boeing aircraft (Advantageous).
  • Experience on Commercial Jets exceeding 20 Tons (Advantageous).
  • Minimum of 1500 flight hours, including 500 hours of Multi-Turbine time (Essential).
  • Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) experience (Essential).
  • No existing medical conditions that would preclude flight duties.
  • Willingness to sign applicable training bond(s).
  • No criminal record.
  • Willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
  • Possession of own transport and a valid RSA Driver’s License.
  • South African Citizenship with valid proof of identity.
  • Valid RSA Passport.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster basis.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of National Aviation Regulations, including SACAA and ICAO.
  • Knowledge of ICAO Document 8186 (Essential).
  • Familiarity with Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing content.
