Assistant Chief Pilot – USVI

Fly The Whale, a premier on-demand aircraft charter service founded in 2009 with operations in the Northeast, Florida, and The Bahamas, seeks a highly skilled and motivated Assistant Chief Pilot to be based in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. This critical role supports scheduled service operations between St. Croix and both St. Thomas and San Juan, as well as other locations. The Assistant Chief Pilot will provide essential leadership and management to the USVI based pilot team.

The Assistant Chief Pilot must demonstrate exceptional leadership, management, communication, and problem-solving abilities. This individual will oversee the daily operations of the flight crew, ensuring adherence to company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Strong technical and operational knowledge of aircraft systems and procedures are essential. The Assistant Chief Pilot acts as a liaison between the flight crew and management, assisting in strategic planning and representing the company in external meetings and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serving as a Company Training Captain and Check Airman, responsible for the initial training and evaluation of new pilots.
  • Evaluating pilot performance and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Acting as an Instructor and Check Airman, and providing support to the Maintenance Department with aircraft operational checks.
  • Developing and administering individual performance plans for USVI based pilots.
  • Monitoring pilot performance and ensuring compliance with FAA Commercial Pilot in Command requirements.
  • Serving as the USVI Flight Operations safety representative, working closely with the company Safety Officer.
  • Coordinating with the company Safety Officer regarding entries into the SMS program.
  • Ensuring pilot compliance with all relevant manuals, company Operations Specifications, and Federal Aviation Regulations.
  • Reviewing, correcting, and submitting required paperwork for self and USVI flight crew.
  • Developing and implementing USVI pilot schedules, rotations, reliefs, and replacements.
  • Maintaining manuals and documentation for USVI flight operations and aircrew training.
  • Maintaining accountability of assigned equipment and assisting with aviation equipment inspections and program contracting as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Significant prior experience managing, training, checking, and/or supervising pilots and aviation operations as an FAA Part 135 Assistant Chief Pilot, Check Airman, or Chief Pilot; Public Aircraft Operations Instructor Pilot, Assistant Chief Pilot or Chief Pilot; Law Enforcement Instructor, Assistant Chief or Chief Pilot; or as a U.S. Military Instructor/Standardization Pilot.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Commercial SEL w/ Instrument Rating, or ATP SEL.
  • High Performance Endorsement.
  • Minimum of 1200 hours total time, 500 hours cross country (point to point), 100 hours night, and 75 hours instrument.

Preferred Experience:

  • 100 hours Pilot in Command in CE-208.
  • G1000 experience.
  • Part 135 experience with Instructor and/or Check Airman responsibilities.
  • Valid 2nd class medical.
  • Demonstrated ability to function collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to consistently make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Valid unrestricted US Passport and/or VISA.
  • Approximately 25% administrative duties and 75% flying.
  • Travel will be required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Part 135 Caravan experience as an Instructor and Check Airman.
  • Previous Aviation Management experience.
