Instructor of Music, Theory/Composition

Overview:

Arkansas State University (A-State) invites applications for a 9-month appointment as an Instructor of Music in Theory/Composition, commencing August 16, 2026. The successful candidate will join the esteemed Department of Music, recognized regionally for its artistic excellence and commitment to student success. This role is situated on the Jonesboro campus.

Position Summary:

The Instructor of Music in Theory/Composition is expected to provide exceptional instruction in music theory and composition at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The department seeks an educator who will contribute to its vibrant academic and artistic environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate music theory courses.
• Instruct in Orchestration.
• Lead courses in Form and Analysis.
• Deliver instruction in Aural Theory.
• Teach Counterpoint.
• Guide students in Applied Music Composition.
• Undertake additional duties as assigned, based on the applicant's strengths and the Department of Music's needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicants must demonstrate a proven record of excellence in teaching and artistic leadership within the fields of music theory and composition. Scholarly and creative activity is highly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Master of Music degree in Theory and/or Composition is required. A Doctorate in Theory and/or Composition is preferred.

Work Schedule:

The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Additional hours may be required for musical events on evenings and weekends.
