Job Overview: F/A-18 Plane Captain

Amentum is seeking qualified F/A-18 Plane Captains to support U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations at NAS Oceana, VA. This position requires the ability to work rotating shifts and travel for detachments, both ashore and afloat on aircraft carriers.

Key Responsibilities

The Aircraft Worker will be required to become Plane Captain certified per a government-approved process. Primary duties include:

  • Directing incoming and outgoing aircraft using hand or light signals and securing aircraft with chocks and tie-downs.
  • Performing flight line servicing, including operating service vehicles to replenish fuel and oil.
  • Conducting pre-flight and post-flight maintenance inspections and documenting all servicing in maintenance records.
  • Checking for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
  • Operating ground support equipment, such as electrical power supplies, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
  • Assisting in towing aircraft and cleaning aircraft exterior and interior.
  • Performing hangar deck housekeeping, including fluid spill cleanup using standard tools.

The position may involve a 40-hour work week, including potential overtime and weekend work depending on operational tempo.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent, actual organizational-level aircraft maintenance experience is desired.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license (or North Carolina license if a resident).
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with special tools and equipment required for maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, and operating/maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including frequent standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining facility credentials and a Security Clearance for Public Trust.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and maintain favorable EQIP status (SF-85/86) to retain a CAC card.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, exposed to loud noise and exhaust fumes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
  • Completion of military aviation maintenance training, technical school, or possession of an FAA-issued A&P license.
  • Direct experience with U.S. Navy F/A-18 aircraft.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly rate for this position is $35.36. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, education, internal equity, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
