Job Overview: Plane Captain - Line Mechanic

The Plane Captain - Line Mechanic is responsible for aircraft handling, servicing, and performing daily or turnaround inspections. This role provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to personnel while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of flight line activities.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform daily and turnaround inspections in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Initiate and complete required maintenance documentation.
  • Conduct aircraft fuel sampling and servicing per established protocols.
  • Execute aircraft launch and recovery operations, including serving as an aircraft taxi director.
  • Perform aircraft towing duties and act as a brake rider when required.
  • Secure and cover aircraft using standardized procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to team members.
  • Operate two-way communication equipment.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
  • Maintain adherence to all industrial safety regulations and protocols regarding facility and equipment security.
  • Operate portable firefighting equipment and maintain work center cleanliness.
  • Provide professional customer service and perform additional qualified duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance (US Citizenship required).
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to follow technical instructions.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety/maintenance manuals, aircraft handling, marshaling, and common hand tools.
  • Physical ability to climb, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, crouch, kneel, carry, balance, and reach; must be able to push or pull up to 70 pounds.
  • Visual acuity (including color vision, depth perception, and focus) and normal hearing range.
  • Must complete a certified plane captain training program and requalify semi-annually.
  • Must be qualified on all assigned aircraft T/M/S and available for all assigned shifts and schedules.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required government or company licenses and certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with F-18E/F, EA-18G, E-2C, and/or MH-60S aircraft.
  • Training in Hazardous Waste Communications, FOD/TCP Awareness, ISO 9001-2000, and Operational Risk Management (ORM).
  • Licensing for support equipment (tow tractor, nitrogen cart, engine wash cart, engine start unit).
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to use a respirator if required.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly Rate: $55.75 (Set by Collective Bargaining Agreement).
