F/A-18 Plane Captain - Aircraft Maintenance

Job Overview

Amentum is actively seeking qualified individuals to join its team as F/A-18 Plane Captains. This critical role supports U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. Successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring the readiness and proper servicing of F/A-18 aircraft. The position requires flexibility to work rotating shifts and may involve travel for detachments, including assignments aboard aircraft carriers.

Responsibilities

Aircraft Workers in this role will achieve Plane Captain certification in accordance with government-approved processes. Key duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Directing aircraft on the flight line and in parking areas using hand or light signals to assist pilots with ground maneuvering.
  • Securing aircraft in parking positions using chocks and tie-downs.
  • Performing comprehensive flight line servicing of aircraft.
  • Operating service vehicles for fuel and oil replenishment.
  • Conducting pre-flight through post-flight maintenance inspections.
  • Documenting servicing activities in maintenance records.
  • Checking for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
  • Operating ground support equipment, including electrical power supplies, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
  • Inspecting tires for correct air pressure and condition.
  • Assisting in towing aircraft.
  • Cleaning aircraft exteriors and interiors, as well as performing periodic housekeeping in hangar decks and addressing fluid spills using appropriate equipment.

This position may require work up to 7 days a week, 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime based on operational tempo.

Security Requirements

Candidates must be able to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check, including favorable fingerprinting in EQIP. Completion of an SF-85/86 may be required to maintain a Common Access Card (CAC). Failure to obtain or maintain the required security clearance or CAC eligibility may result in termination.

Minimum Requirements

  • Availability to work rotating shifts and participate in detachments, both ashore and afloat (aircraft carriers).
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of actual and recent organizational-level aircraft maintenance experience is desired.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Driver License or a North Carolina Driver License (if a North Carolina resident).
  • Mandatory knowledge and proficiency in the use of special tools and equipment necessary for assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to perform work primarily outdoors in diverse weather conditions, with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
  • Capacity to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements associated with and/or pass any medical examinations required for assigned tasks, including significant standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
  • Must obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system, which includes a 7-year background check, and obtain a Security Clearance for Public Trust.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. U.S. Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
  • Completion of military aviation maintenance training or a maintenance technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA issued A&P license.
  • Prior experience with U.S. Navy aviation, specifically on F/A-18 aircraft, is highly preferred.
