Job Summary
The Plane Captain is a vital role within aviation maintenance and flight line operations, responsible for the safe and efficient handling, servicing, and inspection of aircraft. This position requires a highly skilled individual capable of performing comprehensive pre-operational checks, daily and turnaround inspections, and providing essential ground support. The Plane Captain also offers technical guidance and instruction to junior personnel, ensuring strict adherence to rigorous safety and operational standards.
Essential Responsibilities
- Executes aircraft handling, servicing, daily, and turnaround inspections in strict accordance with applicable procedures.
- Conducts pre-operational inspections and fuels ground support equipment.
- Initiates and accurately completes all required maintenance forms and documentation.
- Performs aircraft fuel sampling and servicing procedures as established.
- Manages aircraft launch and recovery operations, serving as the aircraft taxi director.
- Executes aircraft towing and acts as the aircraft brake rider when necessary.
- Ensures proper aircraft tie-down and covering, adhering to established protocols.
- Provides expert technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to Aircraft Washers and Plane Captain Helpers.
- Utilizes two-way communication equipment effectively during operations.
- Upholds stringent compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, Hazardous Waste management, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Adheres to all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations pertinent to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
- Safeguards the safety, security, and preservation of both government and company-owned equipment.
- Delivers courteous and professional customer service.
- Operates portable firefighting equipment as required.
- Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the work center.
- Performs other assigned and related duties as necessary to support operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Possession of a minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
- A valid Driver's License is mandatory.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any required company, government, or security clearances, qualifications, certifications, or licenses.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, understanding, and communicating in the English language, with the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable aviation safety and maintenance manuals.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, including aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, the use of common hand tools, and standard operational safety requirements specific to aircraft.
- Flexibility to work any assigned shift and schedule is essential.
- Ability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This role necessitates a range of physical movements typical of aviation maintenance and flight line activities, including bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in various positions. Candidates must possess excellent eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, with the ability to lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds. The position requires extended periods of walking and standing on diverse surfaces, as well as close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Normal range hearing is also essential, and the use of a respirator may be required.
The work environment is dynamic, ranging from comfortable conditions to exposure to inclement weather, including severe temperature changes, wind, and rain. The Plane Captain may be exposed to high noise hazards, electrical shock hazards, and airborne particles or fumes.
