F/A-18 Plane Captain / Aircraft Maintenance Technician at NAS Oceana, VA

Amentum is immediately hiring dedicated Aircraft Maintenance Technicians to serve as F/A-18 Plane Captains, providing essential maintenance support for U.S. Navy aircraft operations at NAS Oceana, Virginia. This critical role requires individuals capable of achieving Plane Captain certification in accordance with a government-approved process.

The Aircraft Maintenance Technician performs a comprehensive range of flight line and maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include directing incoming and outgoing aircraft near the terminal or flight line parking area, assisting pilots with ground maneuvering using hand or light signals, and securing aircraft in parking positions with chocks and tie-downs. The technician conducts aircraft flight line servicing, operates service vehicles to replenish fuel and oil, and performs thorough pre-flight through post-flight maintenance inspections. Accurate documentation of servicing performed is entered on maintenance records. The role also involves checking for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains, operating ground support equipment (GSE) such as electrical power supplies, tow tractors, and engine starting units, and examining tires for specified air pressure and condition. The technician assists in towing aircraft and is responsible for cleaning the exterior and interior of aircraft, as well as performing periodic housekeeping on the hangar deck and cleaning up fluid spills using appropriate equipment and cleaning compounds.

This position requires working rotating shifts and involves travel for detachments, both ashore and aboard aircraft carriers. The operational tempo may necessitate working up to 7 days and 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime. Work is performed primarily outdoors under various weather conditions, with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes. The role is physically demanding, involving a significant amount of standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and undertake detachments (ashore and afloat).
  • Possession of a valid Virginia or North Carolina (if a resident) Driver's license is mandatory.
  • Knowledge and proficient use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must be a self-motivator capable of working with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements associated with the role and/or pass any required medical examination.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check and favorable fingerprints in EQIP.
  • May be required to complete a SF-85/86 in EQIP as required to obtain and maintain a CAC identification; unfavorable background check results may lead to termination if CAC eligibility cannot be maintained.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: U.S. Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director certification or experience.
  • Completion of military aviation maintenance training or a maintenance technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA-issued A&P license.
  • Prior U.S. Navy aviation experience on F/A-18 aircraft is highly preferred.
