Plane Captain Job Description

Overview

A successful Plane Captain is responsible for comprehensive aircraft handling and servicing, including required daily and turnaround inspections. This role involves conducting pre-operational inspections and fueling of ground support equipment. The Plane Captain also provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to team members in Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper roles.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs the duties and responsibilities of the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
  • Performs daily and turnaround inspections as required according to applicable procedures.
  • Initiates and completes applicable maintenance forms.
  • Performs aircraft fuel sampling/servicing as required in accordance with established procedures.
  • Launches and recovers aircraft.
  • Serves as aircraft taxi director during launch and recovery operations.
  • Performs aircraft towing and acts as aircraft brake rider when required.
  • Secures aircraft (ties down and covers) utilizing established procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction as required.
  • Utilizes two-way communication equipment as required.
  • Ensures compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
  • Ensures compliance with all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and preservation of government and company owned equipment.
  • Provides courteous and professional customer service.
  • Operates portable firefighting equipment.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the work center.
  • Performs other qualified duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain any company/government required qualification, certification, licensing, or security clearance.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in the English language and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
  • Thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and normal operational safety requirements of the aircraft.
  • Must be able to work any assigned shift and schedule.
  • Ability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Physical Demands: The classification activity requires the scope of physical movements and postures normally associated with shop, hanger, and flight line maintenance activities, including bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions. Ability to use eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is required. May be required to lift objects whose weight normally will not exceed 70 pounds. Ability to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day. Must have close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to hear at the normal range is necessary. May require the use of a respirator.

Work Environment: The diversity of work conditions may range from an environment where there is little or no physical discomfort to an environment where inclement weather may subject the individual to severe changes of temperature, wind, rain, etc. May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail. May be exposed to electrical shock hazards, fumes, or airborne particles.
