F/A-18 Plane Captain
Amentum is seeking qualified F/A-18 Plane Captains to support U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations at NAS Oceana, VA. This role is critical to ensuring the operational readiness of F/A-18 aircraft.
The Plane Captain works as part of a dedicated team, contributing to flight line support and maintenance tasks. This position requires adherence to rigorous safety and quality standards. The successful candidate will be expected to work rotating shifts and may be required to travel for detachments, both ashore and afloat aboard aircraft carriers. Candidates will undergo government-approved certification processes to become certified Plane Captains.
Responsibilities:
- Directs incoming and outgoing aircraft on the ground near terminal or flight line parking areas using standard hand or light signals.
- Secures aircraft in parking positions using chocks and tie-downs.
- Performs aircraft flight line servicing.
- Operates service vehicles to replenish fuel and oil.
- Conducts pre-flight through post-flight maintenance inspections.
- Documents servicing performed in maintenance records.
- Checks for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
- Operates ground support equipment, including electrical power supply, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Examines tires for specified air pressure and condition.
- Assists in towing aircraft.
- Cleans aircraft exterior and interior.
- Performs hangar deck periodic housekeeping and addresses fluid spills.
- Utilizes portable platform ladders, brushes, rags, water hoses, cleaning compound applicators, and mobile vacuums as needed.
- May be required to work up to 7 days per week and overtime depending on operational tempo.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts and travel for detachments (ashore and afloat aboard Aircraft Carriers).
- Possession of a valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver's License (if a North Carolina resident) is required.
- Mandatory knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required for assigned maintenance tasks.
- Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Must be a self-motivator and capable of working with minimum supervision.
- Ability to meet physical requirements and/or pass any medical examination requirements related to performing daily assigned tasks.
- The role involves a significant amount of standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
- Must be able to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check and favorable fingerprints (EQIP). May be required to complete an SF-85/86 in EQIP to maintain a CAC card. An unfavorable background check potentially leading to ineligibility for a CAC card may result in termination.
- Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization is required. U.S. Citizenship is mandatory for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior certification as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
- Completion of military aviation maintenance training or a maintenance technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA issued A&P license is preferred.
- Prior U.S. Navy aviation maintenance experience, especially on F/A-18 aircraft, is highly preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of actual and recent organizational level aircraft maintenance experience is desired.
Work is performed primarily outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
