Plane Captain

Overview

The Plane Captain is responsible for the proficient handling and servicing of aircraft. This role encompasses the execution of daily and turnaround inspections in accordance with established procedures. The Plane Captain provides pre-operational inspections, fuels ground support equipment, and offers technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to employees in the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications. This position demands a high degree of attention to detail, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively within a dynamic aviation environment.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities associated with the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
  • Conducts daily and turnaround inspections as required, adhering to all applicable procedures.
  • Initiates and completes all required maintenance forms accurately and thoroughly.
  • Performs aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in strict accordance with established protocols.
  • Participates in the launch and recovery of aircraft.
  • Acts as an aircraft taxi director during launch and recovery operations.
  • Executes aircraft towing operations and serves as the aircraft brake rider when needed.
  • Secures and covers aircraft using established tie-down procedures.
  • Offers technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to colleagues as required.
  • Operates two-way communication equipment effectively and reliably.
  • Ensures strict compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
  • Maintains adherence to all general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and proper preservation of all government and company-owned equipment.
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all customers.
  • Operates portable firefighting equipment as required.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the assigned work center.
  • Performs all other qualified duties as assigned, contributing to the team’s overall mission.
  • Executes all other position-related duties as assigned or requested by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations is essential.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining any company or government-required qualifications, certifications, licenses, or security clearances.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English, and to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals is required.
  • Possesses a thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshalling, common hand tools, and the standard operational safety requirements of aircraft.
  • Must be available to work any assigned shift and schedule.
  • Must have the ability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Physical Demands:

This position requires the physical capacity to perform movements and postures associated with shop/hanger/flight line maintenance activities. This includes the ability to bend, stoop, walk, climb, push, stretch, kneel, and work in potentially tiring or uncomfortable positions. The ability to utilize eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is essential. The role may require lifting objects, with a weight that will normally not exceed 70 pounds. Must be capable of walking and standing on level or inclined surfaces for extended periods. This position requires close vision capabilities, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, as well as normal hearing range. The use of a respirator may be required.

Work Environment:

Work conditions can vary from environments with minimal physical discomfort to those with exposure to inclement weather, including extreme temperature changes, wind, and rain. The employee may be required to work in areas with high noise hazards and may be exposed to electrical shock hazards, as well as fumes or airborne particles.
