Plane Captain

Overview:

The Plane Captain is a crucial role responsible for the meticulous handling and servicing of aircraft. This individual conducts daily and turnaround inspections, ensuring the aircraft is in optimal condition. They are also responsible for pre-operational inspections, fueling ground support equipment, and providing technical guidance and instruction to Aircraft Washers and Plane Captain Helpers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities associated with the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
  • Executes daily and turnaround inspections according to established procedures.
  • Initiates and completes required maintenance documentation.
  • Conducts aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in strict accordance with established protocols.
  • Participates in the launch and recovery of aircraft.
  • Directs aircraft taxiing during launch and recovery operations.
  • Engages in aircraft towing procedures, acting as a brake rider when necessary.
  • Securely ties down and covers aircraft using approved procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to other team members as needed.
  • Utilizes two-way communication equipment effectively.
  • Ensures strict compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
  • Maintains full adherence to all general and industrial safety regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and assigned tasks.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and preservation of all government and company-owned equipment.
  • Provides professional and courteous customer service at all times.
  • Operates portable firefighting equipment proficiently.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the work center.
  • Performs all other qualified duties as assigned.
  • Fulfills any other position-related duties as directed or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations is mandatory.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain and maintain any company or government-required qualification, certification, licensing, or security clearance.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, understanding, and communicating in the English language, as well as comprehending verbal and written instructions.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
  • Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and normal operational safety requirements of aircraft.
  • Must be available to work any assigned shift and schedule, including irregular hours.
  • Must have the ability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

The position requires physical movements and postures associated with shop, hangar, and flight line maintenance activities. These may include bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. The role requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. It also may require lifting objects not exceeding 70 pounds, standing on level or inclined surfaces for extended periods, having close and color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to hear at a normal range and the potential use of a respirator are also requirements.

Work environment may range from an area with little physical discomfort to conditions where inclement weather may lead to severe temperature changes, wind, or rain. Exposure to high noise hazards, electrical shock hazards, fumes, or airborne particles may also occur.
