Plane Captain – F/A-18 Aircraft (NAS Oceana, VA)
Amentum is seeking highly motivated and experienced Plane Captains to support U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of F/A-18 aircraft. This position requires rotating shifts and occasional travel for detachments. Plane Captain certification, in accordance with government-approved processes, will be provided.
Responsibilities:
The Plane Captain’s duties encompass a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Directing incoming and outgoing aircraft, utilizing hand and light signals to guide pilots during ground maneuvers and secure aircraft using chocks and tie-downs.
- Performing aircraft flight line servicing, including fueling and oil replenishment using specialized service vehicles.
- Conducting comprehensive pre-flight and post-flight maintenance inspections, meticulously documenting all servicing activities in the aircraft’s maintenance records.
- Identifying and addressing potential fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
- Operating ground support equipment, such as electrical power supplies, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Inspecting aircraft tires for proper air pressure and condition.
- Assisting in aircraft towing procedures.
- Maintaining the cleanliness of aircraft interiors and exteriors, as well as performing periodic housekeeping tasks in hangar decks, including cleaning up fluid spills.
- Adhering to a work schedule that may include up to 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime depending on operational tempo.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of recent organizational-level aircraft maintenance experience is strongly preferred.
- Valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license (North Carolina license required for North Carolina residents).
- Proven knowledge and practical experience with specialized tools and equipment used in aircraft maintenance.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
- Capacity to read, interpret, and apply technical publications, safety regulations, operating instructions, and maintenance procedure manuals.
- Must meet all physical requirements associated with the job and pass any required medical examinations. This position requires significant standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system, which includes a seven-year background check, and obtain a Public Trust Security Clearance.
- US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director experience.
- Completion of military aviation maintenance training or a maintenance technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA A&P license.
- Prior experience with U.S. Navy aviation maintenance on F/A-18 aircraft.
Security Clearance:
Candidates will be required to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check, including favorable fingerprints in EQIP. Completion of an SF-85/86 in EQIP may be required to maintain possession of a CAC card. An unfavorable background check may result in termination.
