Plane Captain – F/A-18 Aircraft (NAS Oceana, VA)
Amentum seeks highly motivated and experienced Plane Captains to contribute to the essential maintenance operations of U.S. Navy F/A-18 aircraft at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. This critical role demands a commitment to precision, safety, and adherence to strict operational procedures.
Responsibilities:
The Plane Captain will assume responsibility for the safe and efficient handling of F/A-18 aircraft, encompassing a range of duties including:
- Directing aircraft movement on the flight line, utilizing hand and light signals to guide pilots in maneuvering and parking.
- Securing aircraft using chocks and tie-downs.
- Performing pre-flight and post-flight inspections, adhering to established maintenance protocols.
- Executing aircraft servicing, including fuel and oil replenishment.
- Operating ground support equipment (GSE), such as tow tractors, engine starting units, and electrical power supplies.
- Conducting routine maintenance tasks, including tire pressure checks and aircraft cleaning (interior and exterior).
- Maintaining meticulous records of all servicing and maintenance activities.
- Performing periodic housekeeping in hangar areas, including addressing fluid spills.
- Working rotating shifts and participating in detachments as required by operational tempo.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of recent, relevant aircraft maintenance experience at an organizational level.
- Valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license (depending on residency).
- Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience with specialized tools and equipment required for F/A-18 maintenance.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical publications, safety regulations, and operational/maintenance manuals.
- Capacity to work effectively with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong self-motivation.
- Ability to meet all physical requirements of the role and pass any associated medical examinations. This role involves significant standing, bending, stooping, and climbing.
- Successful completion of a U.S. Government background security check, including fingerprinting.
- Ability to obtain and maintain both Contractor Verification system approval and a Public Trust Security Clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (U.S. Citizenship is mandatory).
The work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, with potential exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
- Completion of military aviation maintenance training or a comparable technical school curriculum. Possession of an FAA A&P license is advantageous.
- Previous experience maintaining U.S. Navy F/A-18 aircraft.
