Plane Captain Job Description
Overview
The Plane Captain is responsible for a wide range of aircraft handling, servicing, and inspection duties, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aircraft. This role encompasses pre-operational inspections, fueling, and ground support equipment management. The Plane Captain also provides technical guidance and instruction to team members in the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Performs daily and turn-around inspections according to established procedures.
- Initiates and completes applicable maintenance forms.
- Conducts aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in accordance with established procedures.
- Launches and recovers aircraft, serving as the aircraft taxi director during these operations.
- Toews aircraft and acts as the aircraft brake rider when required.
- Secures and covers aircraft using established procedures.
- Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to team members.
- Utilizes two-way communication equipment as needed.
- Ensures compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Adheres to all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
- Safeguards the security and preservation of government and company-owned equipment.
- Provides courteous and professional customer service.
- Operates portable firefighting equipment.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the work center.
- Performs other qualified duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Two (2) or more years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any company/government required qualification, certification, licensing, or security clearance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and normal operational safety requirements of the aircraft.
- Ability to work any assigned shift and schedule.
- Willingness to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Physical Demands:
The Plane Captain role requires a range of physical movements and postures commonly associated with shop/hanger/flight line maintenance activities, including bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions. The position demands eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, and the ability to lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds. The Plane Captain must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day. The position also requires close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the Plane Captain must have the ability to hear at the normal range. The role may require the use of a respirator.
Work Environment:
The work environment can vary significantly, ranging from an environment with minimal physical discomfort to an environment where inclement weather may expose the individual to severe changes in temperature, wind, rain, etc. The Plane Captain may be required to work in areas with high noise hazards, potential electrical shock hazards, fumes, or airborne particles.
