Position Overview
This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service non-bargaining unit position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the Montana Air National Guard, 120 OSS.
Duties and Responsibilities
The selected candidate will pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter aircraft, on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques. Key responsibilities include:

Executing flight procedures and maneuvers across all weather conditions while maintaining thorough knowledge of aircraft systems under normal and emergency parameters.

Performing comprehensive pre-flight planning, including weather analysis, route mapping, fuel requirements, weight distribution, and crew briefings.

Ensuring operational safety by adhering to manual specifications, communicating with ground units, and managing in-flight progress.

Completing post-flight documentation, including logs, reports, and coordination with maintenance personnel.

Serving as the Air Commander’s representative as the Supervisor of Flying (SOF).

Performing administrative duties across functional areas, including Training and Scheduling, Plans, Safety, and Inspector General operations.
Qualifications
Military Grade Requirements
O4/Major – O5/Lieutenant Colonel
Education and Certification

Must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (transcripts required).

Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications from an accredited civilian program or aviation certifications from an accredited military aviation school.

Must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C, or able to qualify within six months of hire.

Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) is required.
Experience

Must demonstrate a competent understanding of the occupation's basic principles.

Minimum of two years of specialized experience in civilian aviation, military service aviation, Army National Guard Aviation Support facilities, or Air National Guard Wing/Operations groups.

Must have at least two years of experience in piloting or instructing in specific airframes/military aircraft.

Demonstrated expertise in mission planning, navigation, aircraft inspection, in-flight operations, and crew training is required.
Conditions of Employment

National Guard membership is required prior to the effective date of placement.

Must be eligible for and maintain an appropriate security clearance for access to classified information.

Must maintain the same medical standards as USAF military pilots.

Selectee is required to wear the military uniform.

Mandatory participation in direct deposit.

Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.

External applicants must be available to start within six months of selection.

Work may require travel and irregular duty hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
