Job Summary: Air National Guard Airplane Pilot (T32)

Location: Duluth, MN | Unit: 148 OSS FT

This is a Title 32 Excepted Service position. The incumbent serves as an Airplane Pilot (GS-2181-13) for the Air National Guard. Membership in the Minnesota Air National Guard is a mandatory condition of employment. The appointment is subject to a two-year trial period.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilots advanced single or multi-engine military high-performance fighter aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions, utilizing precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Executes normal flight procedures and standard maneuvers across all weather conditions.
  • Conducts pre-flight planning, including weather analysis, route mapping, fuel requirements, and aircraft readiness verification.
  • Ensures safety through strict adherence to flight manuals, coordination with ground units, and diligent monitoring of aircraft performance.
  • Performs post-flight activities, including logbook maintenance, flight reports, and maintenance coordination.
  • Acts as the Air Commander’s representative when serving as Supervisor of Flying (SOF), with authority to manage mission requirements, airspace utilization, and emergency actions.
  • Rotates through Air Operations support functional areas, including Training and Scheduling, Operational Planning, and Safety Program management.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Education: A mandatory undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is required. A graduate degree is considered optimal.
  • Aviation Certification: Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications from accredited civilian programs OR aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools.
  • Pilot Training: Must be a graduate of USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Experience: Must have at least two years of working experience in civilian aviation programs, military service aviation programs, or Air National Guard Operations groups.
  • Medical Standards: Must maintain the same medical standards as required for USAF military pilots.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain active membership in the Minnesota Air National Guard in a compatible military position and Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC).
  • Must wear the military uniform.
  • Must successfully complete a federal background investigation, including checks on criminal history, employment, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • Subject to a probationary period and mandatory direct deposit participation.
  • Employment is contingent upon medical and physical fitness requirements.

Military Compatibility

Candidates must hold a military rank between 1st Lt (O2) and Lt Col (O5). Acceptance of this position may impact existing Selected Reserve bonuses. This position requires the ability to foster effective professional working relationships and contribute to a cooperative operational environment.
