Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire) - GS-2181-13

Position Location: Air National Guard (ANG) Aviation Wing, Operations Group, CA 144 FW.

This is a T32 Excepted Service position. Appointments may be permanent, indefinite, or temporary. Indefinite positions may be non-competitively converted to permanent status, and temporary positions may be extended up to four years, contingent upon funding and position availability.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire) is to operate unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing essential administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Key Requirements and Conditions of Employment

  • Membership Requirement: Applicants must be or become members of the California National Guard. Acceptance of this position constitutes concurrence with requirements to wear the military uniform and adhere to grooming standards.
  • Military Compatibility: Selectees must hold a compatible military assignment, grade, and unit affiliation as required by current directives.
  • Security Clearance: Must maintain an appropriate level of security clearance.
  • Administrative: Mandatory participation in direct deposit; compliance with Selective Service registration requirements for male applicants born after December 31, 1959.
  • Areas of Consideration: Eligible candidates include current California National Guard employees, current California National Guard members, and current military members of the Air Force/Army National Guard, Reserve, or Active Duty.

Qualifications

General Experience: Candidates must possess a Federal Aviation Administration certification from an accredited civilian aviation program or an aviation certification from an accredited military aviation school. Additionally, candidates must have one year of on-the-job experience in the grade or comparable military rank immediately below the next higher level.

Specialized Experience (GS-2181-13): Candidates must possess at least 36 months of specialized competence in operating specific main-frame military aircraft, mission planning, and preparation. Required proficiencies include:

  • Reviewing mission tasking, intelligence, and weather data.
  • Conducting flight plan filing and crew briefings.
  • Performing aircraft preflight inspections, loading, and equipment assessments.
  • Managing navigation, in-flight refueling, search and rescue, or reconnaissance operations.
  • Training crew members in mission-specific tasks.
  • Developing plans and policies, advising commanders, and monitoring operations.
  • Expertise in flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, and mission tactics.
  • Compliance with unit safety, explosive, and ground safety programs.

Education and Certification

Documentation of Federal Aviation Administration or military aviation certification is mandatory at the time of application. Transcripts or certificates must be submitted to verify qualifications. Foreign education must be evaluated for equivalence to U.S. standards by an accredited agency.
