Role Summary
The Montana Air National Guard is seeking a qualified Airplane Pilot for an excepted service, non-bargaining unit position. The incumbent will pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions, utilizing precision instrument flight techniques. The role involves comprehensive mission planning, rigorous safety adherence, and potential rotation into administrative program support areas, including Training and Scheduling, Plans, Safety, and Inspector General functions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Execute standard and advanced flight maneuvers in varying weather conditions while maintaining thorough knowledge of aircraft systems and emergency procedures.

Conduct exhaustive pre-flight preparations, including weather analysis, route mapping, fuel requirement calculations, and flight plan filing.

Ensure the safety of crew and passengers through detailed briefings, pre-flight inspections, and rigorous adherence to flight manual parameters.

Perform post-flight reporting, log maintenance, and coordination with ground and maintenance personnel.

Serve as the Air Commander’s representative in the Supervisor of Flying (SOF) capacity.

Provide expert support in administrative functional areas:

Training and Scheduling:
Designing training plans, establishing goals, and managing flying schedules.

Plans:
Developing unit wartime and peacetime contingency plans.

Safety:
Administering flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in compliance with OSHA and Air Force directives.

Inspector General:
Managing the Commander’s Inspection Program and fraud, waste, and abuse programs.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (transcripts required).

Training:
Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).

Certification:
Must hold Federal Aviation Administration certifications (civilian program) OR aviation certifications from an accredited military aviation school (documentation required).

Military Status:
Current membership in the Montana Air National Guard is required. Applicants must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C or capable of qualifying within six months of hire.

Medical:
Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.

Experience:

Minimum of two years of specialized experience in aviation programs (civilian, active duty, reserve, or National Guard).

Demonstrated experience in piloting/instructing in specific air-frames, mission planning, and mission execution.

Proficiency in applying directives, safety regulations, and operational risk management.
Conditions of Employment

National Guard membership must be maintained throughout the duration of the appointment.

Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for the position.

Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

Candidates must comply with Selective Service registration requirements (males born after 31 December 1959).

Work may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel via military or commercial air.
