Position Overview: Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire)

The Air National Guard (ANG) Aviation Wing, Operations Group, CA 144 FW, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Airplane Pilot (GS-2181-13). This is an excepted service position involving the piloting of unit-equipped (UE) aircraft and the execution of administrative tasks to support the Air Operations program.

This is an open-until-filled announcement. Applications are reviewed every 30 days.

Position Type and Employment Status

This role may be filled as a permanent, indefinite, or temporary appointment. Indefinite positions may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent status based on funding and position availability. Temporary positions may be extended for up to four years subject to regulatory guidelines.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft.
  • Perform administrative functions in support of the Air Operations program.
  • Review and analyze mission tasking, intelligence, and weather data.
  • Conduct crew briefings and file flight plans.
  • Perform preflight inspections, aircraft loading, and equipment assessments.
  • Manage or execute navigation, in-flight refueling, search and rescue, and reconnaissance operations.
  • Supervise and train crew members on complex mission-specific tasks.
  • Advise commanders and develop plans, policies, and mission tactics.
  • Maintain compliance with safety programs, flying directives, and meteorology standards.

Qualification Requirements

General Experience: Candidates must possess a Federal Aviation Administration certification from an accredited civilian aviation program or an aviation certification from an accredited military aviation school. Candidates must also possess at least one year of on-the-job experience in the grade or comparable military rank immediately below the next higher level.

Specialized Experience: Candidates must demonstrate 36 months of specialized competency in operating specific main-frame military aircraft, mission planning, and mission preparation. Evaluations will be based on competencies in Operation and Control, Planning and Evaluating, Education and Training Program Administration, and Safety and Security.

Conditions of Employment

  • California National Guard Membership: Membership in the California National Guard is mandatory. Applicants not currently members must become a member of a compatible unit of assignment within the Air Force CNG prior to federal assignment.
  • Military Compatibility: Selectees must maintain a compatible military unit, grade (O-1 through O-6), and job assignment as required by directives.
  • Uniform and Grooming: Must wear the appropriate military uniform and adhere to required grooming standards.
  • Clearance: Must maintain an appropriate level of security clearance.
  • Administrative Requirements: Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Selective Service registration is required for male applicants born after 12/31/1959.

Education and Certification Documentation

Proof of FAA or military aviation certification and, if applicable, academic transcripts are required at the time of application. Only institutions accredited by the U.S. Department of Education are recognized. Foreign education must be evaluated by a specialized organization to demonstrate equivalency to a U.S. accredited program.

Additional Information
