Job Summary

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service non-bargaining unit position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the Montana Air National Guard, 120 OSS.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate will pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft and high-performance fighter aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions, utilizing precision instrument flight techniques. Responsibilities include comprehensive pre-flight planning, weather assessment, navigation, and crew/passenger briefings. The pilot must operate aircraft with adherence to safety parameters, coordinate with ground units, and perform necessary post-flight documentation and maintenance coordination.

The position requires serving as the Supervisor of Flying (SOF) as the Air Commander’s representative, ensuring safe and efficient mission accomplishment. Incumbents may rotate through administrative support functional areas, including Training and Scheduling, Operational Planning, Safety Program Administration, and Inspector General support.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Military Membership: National Guard membership is mandatory. Applicants must be eligible for immediate membership in the Montana Air National Guard.
  • Military Grade: Must hold or be eligible for military grades O4/Maj - O5/Lt Col.
  • Education: Must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Transcripts are required with the application.
  • Aviation Certification: Must hold FAA certifications from an accredited civilian program OR aviation certifications from an accredited military aviation school.
  • Experience: Must have at least two years of specialized experience in aviation programs (civilian, military active duty, reserve, or National Guard). This must include experience in piloting, instructing, and conducting mission planning, safety management, and unit operations.
  • Technical Qualifications: Must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C or able to qualify within six months of hire. Must have graduated from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Medical: Must maintain the same medical standards as USAF military pilots.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must wear the military uniform.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for access to classified information.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • May be subject to a probationary period and background investigation.
  • Must be available to work non-standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to travel via military or commercial air.
  • External applicants must be able to start within six months of selection.
